One of the staples in the increasingly competitive world of music magazines was sticking some extra crap on the cover – be it a CD, mixtape or a min-mag supplement. In 1999, Jeremy Miller assembled ’32 of Hip-Hop’s Best Verses’ as a pocket-sized pal, perfect for train rides, BBQ’s and…rap karaoke? While you might be thinking, ‘Holy mackerel! How did dude narrow it down to this final line-up?’ On closer inspection, it’s actually just every ‘Dopest Rhyme of the Month’ from June 1991 through to March 1995 – which explains why some solid but far from spectacular entries made the cut. It’s also worth noting that some of these sound great when delivered on record, but don’t exactly have the same impact on paper. Here are my picks for the six that hold-up best without music:
