CRC State of the Nation

Posted on June 11, 2017December 23, 2019 by Robbie Ettelson

There continues to be a fair amount of confusion as to the official position of the Conservative Rap Coalition in regards to new music, so I clearly need to address some of the misinformation that seems to pollute the comment section here whenever feelings are hurt. Here are a few of the basics:

– No Drum Rap is an acceptable part of modern rap. Not everyone is capable of pulling it off particularly well, but no true CRC’er worth his salt would complain about rapping over a decent loop instead of some drum machine and keyboard combo or a crap live band.

– Slightly experimental music is acceptable if balanced out with straightforward rapping. Some recent examples of this are Agallah’s ‘Salvador Dali’ and Westside Gunn’s ‘Don’t Trust A Soul.’

– Rapping about rapping and other Revivalist Backpack Rap behaviour is frowned upon at all times.

– Being technically proficient at rhyming but lacking any charisma, ‘chutzpah’ or personality is in many ways a greater crime than being mediocre on the mic but somewhat entertaining.

– The words ‘underground,’ ‘real hip-hop’ and ‘boom-bap’ have no meaning in the CRC boardroom.

– A lyricist being laid back in their delivery does not equal ‘boring.’ Thus, Roc Marciano, Ka, Granddaddy IU, MF Doom, Willie The Kid and Milano are exempt from slander.

– Anytime you see a song described as ‘introspective’ or ‘deep’ by some dime-a-dozen rap blog, ignore and mark as spam.

– Horns good, saxophone bad (with the exception of the second Lakim Shabazz album).

– Rapping about your feelings too much is frowned upon, unless it involves your son falling out a window and surviving or your mum/moms dying.

– Still rapping in your late thirties and forties doesn’t automatically get you a pass, but it doesn’t open you up for complete disrespect either.

– Having DJ Premier or Pete Rock produce your song no longer means that it automatically deserves a listen.

– Stout and porter are the highest forms of beer. Pale ale and IPA with any kind of fruit involved are the domain of filthy savages.

– The likes of Fabolous, Pusha-T, Outkast, Papoose, Skyzoo, everyone in Slaughterhouse, Troy Ave, Joey Badass, Smoke DZA, Termanology, Red Cafe are not considered to be in the CRC wheelhouse, however enjoying their work does not mean automatic expulsion. You may, however, receiving an official written warning.

– I’m predicting that Da Buze Brovaz album will be one of the best examples of the CRC credo this year.

Please feel free to add your own contributions and/or credos.

Your ” MUM”? What the hell is a ” Mum”???????

I get a big kick out of people who ask Robbie how they should feel about a particular group or rapper. How about:

-Anybody who needs to be told what they like or don’t like should be sent to a labor camp.

Yes, the Buze Brovaz album will be a smash! S/o to Broady champ MarQ Spekt for putting it out

Paradox: If you need a middle-aged White Australian to tell you which Black American music acts are OK to like, the CRC aint for you. ;)

@Dino…How do I know you’re a bitchass chump and dickless coward? Answer-You used an emoji in this post AND in the post where you masked up as me cause I hurt your little feelings. Did you just discover them?

“The CRC ain’t for you!” What a cunt you are! Guess what folks the CRC ain’t for me; cause the CRC been infiltrated by masked up little bitches with zero useful knowledge about the music or the culture. Final note to you @Dino; you cunt….I am BOTH Black and American.

Egotripland gone, Mass Appeal and Missinfo are on hipster autopilot; Nah Right’s comment section went up its own ass and ate itself alive….Rap blogs is DEAD!

“Stout and porter are the highest forms of beer. Pale ale and IPA with any kind of fruit involved are the domain of filthy savages.” šŸ™ŒšŸ¾ Vindicated!!!

I would add Your Old Droog to the list of laid back lyricists.

@bboycult. I don’t know/care who you are. If I were inclined to mock somebody who happily calls themselves a “Boy Cult,” I wouldn’t bother masking my contempt. Nobody cares mate. Get a sense of humour and leave those boys alone.

    @Mike G: Single drops Monday.

@Dino: To be fair, if I lived in New York I would have drunken myself to death at those free open bar events they throw three times a night.

@bboycult: You forgot to add ā€˜Unkut hasn’t posted a new interview in over a year!’

I still check for Primo and Pete Rock productions, hoping they’ll be bangers.

I feel like Run the Jewels needs to be mentioned somewhere as a CRC counterpoint. Replace with whatever crossover “real rap” is popular with the teenagers/bloggers/hipsters as needed.

  24. MalMoe says:

This is no diss by any means but it just sounds like unless Robbie likes it, then you wont see anything on here but the same people that get posted all the time like roc, ka, buze bruvas etc. All dope ppl along with the classics that get put into zippy compilations but there’s so much more out there. Just sayin’. Need sites like this to uphold the new cats that’s doing that real hiphop to get some love. I def agree with the whole Preemo/Pete Rock thing but to a certain extent. Oh… And some of the ass kissing on here is getting just as ridiculous as it is on 2dbz. It’s cool to have your own opinion. Im sure Robbie welcomes some debates. Shout out to everyone

  25. Slappy White says:
    June 15, 2017 at

Also, anybody who uses the term “Just saying” should be immediately killed.

I’m a Kool Keith apologist always trying to enjoy his new music. Do I get in CRC??? Huge fan of Roc Marciano and KA. But I also like Denzel Curry and especially Lil Ugly Mane. Thanks for all of the hard work Rob! Son of Bazerk forever! Peace!

  28. Dino says:
    June 19, 2017 at

@Ricky D: What do you mean “a Kool Keith apologist?” Yes he had a run of terrible albums for most of the decade after “Matthew” but he’s definitely enjoying a renaissance: Dr Dooom2; A couple of slices; Feature Magnetic; Idea of a masterpiece; and, Time Astonishing.

  29. Ricky says:
    June 21, 2017 at

Tashan Dorssett, Comissioner 1 & 2, Seventh Veil, The Conference Room, Siamese Sex Show, Project X…I could go on.

  30. Ricky D says:
    June 22, 2017 at

@dino Agree very much about KK recent output. I love The Preacher and I like KK and Mr. Sche duo.

  31. bboycult says:
    June 25, 2017 at

@Robbie…The only thing I forgot to say is that unkut has become a ‘White Guys Only’ cracka-jack circle jerk of same song opinions about Art created by ‘Never Not Ever White Guys’ and I am bored as fuck w/that shit. That’s what I forgot to say about unkut!

  32. Robbie says:
    June 25, 2017 at

@bboycult: Who are the white rappers who you’d like to see get covered here?

  33. bboycult says:
    June 25, 2017 at

That dope group from 86′ ….what’s the name?Oh yeah! ‘ Your Mama & Them Boyz ‘ …They opened for Just Ice one time @ The Fever.

Carry on w/your Orphan Black sisterhood bruh.

  34. Robbie says:
    June 25, 2017 at

Not sure what an orphan black sisterhood is, but I’m assuming it’s bad meaning bad rather than bad meaning good.
