but you make no mention of his hosting & judging abilities on the excellent wood working reality show “Framework”…

  2. SeanG says:
    May 30, 2017 at

Now I want to know who is 1st??

  3. old school says:

I’m riding with common and in my opinion he dropped three classic albums the third being one day it’ll all make sense

I thought Robbie/this site was starting to slip but wow! This common piece is spot on. I cosign every single syllable. I wholeheartedly agree with this 100%. Common Sense’s 2nd and 3rd albums are dope but the rest is either snoozeville or irkingly pretentious and self-righteous. You nailed it/him Robbie. Well done. Challengers for title as the most boring/pretentious rappers? Talib, Black Thought, Kendrick Lamar, El P, Canibus, Chuck D (post “He got game” OST), and, any rapper still droning on about “Real hip hop” or “the Mainstream Industry” in 2017.

jay z is the most boring man in rap now, if anyone was wondering.

common was much better when he was on the booze.

  6. vital24 says:

No I.D., Twilite Tone & The Unamercian Caravan!

  7. MalMoe says:

Nas has to be the 1st. But just to make my own list…. Nas, Common, Andre 3000, J. Cole, Just about anyone in OkayPlayer including the roots, jay-z, Talib Kweli and Im drawing a blank for now. But even all them ppl i just named werent boring to me at one point and became boring by talk rapping, poetry rapping, sing rapping and becoming too preachy. But also adding too much r&b to their hiphop and dressing weird. Lol. And this is coming from an r&b singer.

  8. Mike G. says:
    May 30, 2017 at

I vote for Jay Z as the boringest man in rap.

  9. Ray ray says:
    May 30, 2017 at

can still windmill at his musty old age , saw him on lip sync battle bust out and was taken by surprise by the agility of the fossil , kinda like Tom cruise still doing he’s own stunts

  10. verge says:
    May 30, 2017 at

Robbie always on point. I did like Be and Finding forever(damn thats a horrible name for an album especially by a guy who tried hard at times to prove he’s not gay). Ok, so those albums aren’t good, but the beats were good mostly.

  11. Robbie says:
    May 30, 2017 at

    @the snow donkey: He’s a tea-totaller now? That explains a lot.

  12. Reese says:
    May 30, 2017 at

I haven’t been a fan of Common since the 2nd album he sold the fuck out no question.
But I see unkut big up trash like Dj Quik and 2 PAC the rapist?
Those two way more boring than Common and never put out classics albums.
    Fuck Outkast too!

  13. Ben says:
    May 30, 2017 at

Resurecttion and One it’ll all make Sense were dope but other than that Common has always a pretty Eh track record.

  14. professor elemental says:
    May 31, 2017 at

A great read there sir, I’ve got more time for Common than most- but even I’ve got to admit that the last couple of albums had me nodding off. Still though, the man’s been rapping for 26 odd years and knocked out some classic albums- he’s earned himself a rest.

  15. DialTone says:
    May 31, 2017 at

Boooooooooo…. What does an article like this even do for HIP-HOP. Shitting on one of the best M.C.’s to ever do it..And still pushing the bar, last album was dope (Maybe a lot of what he does is over you head).I don’t know this just sounds like a hater move to me like the brother ant give you an interview or something. Plus my dude I don’t think you have any concept of SOUL Music reading some of these critiques makes me really wonder, kinda sounds like a dry white dude.

  16. Robbie says:
    May 31, 2017 at

@DialTone: You nailed it. Common, Lupe, J. Cole and Joey Badass are so advanced that only the most highly-evolved super humans have any chance of comprehending their brilliance. Woe is me.

  17. Antonio says:
    May 31, 2017 at

1st is gonna be Talib, no doubt.

  18. Sub X says:
    May 31, 2017 at

    SO true!

  19. Arson says:
    May 31, 2017 at

Common has always been one of those cats you’re supposed to like, but nobody knows why. Resurrection was dope, that’s about it.

  20. oskamadison says:
    May 31, 2017 at

Yall must not have been paying attention the last few years. J. Cole has the number one slot on lock. Got a couple of chuckles out this piece but Com is still in my top 5…

  21. Slappy White says:
    May 31, 2017 at

I dunno… people generally don’t obsess over artists they don’t like. Robbie doth protest too much, me thinks. When he’s alone in his apartment I’ll bet he dances around to Common and sings into a hair brush.

  22. Robbie says:
    May 31, 2017 at

@Slappy: Guilty as charged. I always play ‘The Light’ while enjoying my morning bubble bath.

  23. Slappy White says:
    May 31, 2017 at

    Ha! I knew it!

  24. Blobby says:
    May 31, 2017 at

Common had “Word From Moe Luv Interlude” on his last album, but it wasn’t Moe Luv from Ultra talkin’, it was some old lady. Don’t get it.

  25. Cris says:
    May 31, 2017 at

Huh? No love (or mentions) for Like Water For Chocolate? I thought that was seminal. Contributors read like a who’s who

  26. Reese says:
    May 31, 2017 at

Common’s last album was WACK ASS R and B Bullshit rap!
And J Cole is for people who never heard any of the great MCs.
J Cole got HBO promoting his wack country ass. His Fans are Sissies !

  27. MAAD says:
    June 1, 2017 at

I kinda co-sign with Robbie with his analysis. Plus I was shocked when Com answered in an interview his best 3 albums he made and not one of them was Resurrection. To say he repped Chicago hard is mostly false. He left for Brooklyn many moons ago. I would say Twista is more a representation of Chicago rap.

  28. Paul H says:
    June 1, 2017 at

@Cris – Yeah, I’d say Like Water and Resurrection are Common’s best, but after that….yeah, haven’t been checking for anything dude has done since Be.

Like Water is arguably Common’s last great album; he hadn’t fallen into self-parody, and the Dilla beats are all superb. I mean, you have “Heat” and “Thelonious,” shit knocks.

  29. Siincere says:
    June 1, 2017 at

I’m in the middle of reading the article and it says Pete Rock produced The Bitch in Yoo, but wasn’t it Premo?

  30. Paul H says:
    June 1, 2017 at

@Siincere – Nah, that one was Pete Rock all the way. Premo did “The 6th Sense” on Like Water For Chocolate.

  31. Mike h says:
    June 1, 2017 at

Robbie, I ain’t gonna stand for you shitting on the author of Resurrection and Be. I’m just not. I voted for Talib, by the way. And when did the acrobatic rap style of Black Thought become boring? And don’t nobody say since he freestyles for Fallon.

  32. Reese says:
    June 2, 2017 at

TWISTA IS A FUCKING EMBASSMENT TO CHICAGO!
FIRST HE ON DAS EFX DICK THEN HE ON SOME WACK CALI GANGSTA BULLSHIT!
And let Robbie have his opinion you sensitive fucking dick riders!!!!!!
But Robbie please stop tying with those ” U” in words like ” Favorite” there’s no ” U ” in that. And “. “COS” ???? Sound like you taking to the serial date drug rapist.

  33. Chahlee Chace says:
    June 2, 2017 at

Be and Finding Forever are excellent and poignant pieces of work not to e overlooked.
    t
And although controversial I will say this article speaks to the cultural divide in hiphop.

  34. Oneam says:
    June 2, 2017 at

I can see the points Robbie is making and yes common does not always hit the point but he has made some classics over a long career. So he gets respect. Robbie plays it up at times to give us an entertaining read… All good.

Resurrection is all time classic for me. Also happy to see be getting recognised. I liked the more recent dreamer believer one where he reconnected with no id too.

  35. Oneam says:
    June 2, 2017 at

…..also I’d be happy to see Robbie stick with the correct spelling not the simplified version they use in the states!

  36. Slappy White says:
    June 2, 2017 at

@Oneam: You mean the incorrect version that EVERY one of your favorite rappers uses? Yeah, Americans are simple.

  37. bastardjackyll says:
    June 3, 2017 at

Terrible actor as well, his eyes get big every time he reads a line.

  38. da commanda says:
    June 6, 2017 at

Com does go off on tangents, but he does occasionally come back from the planet weirdo to spit that ish…However, the cover to “Finding Forever” was very disturbing, mad suspect…
