Both the Diggin’ In The Crates crew and this site are now back from hiatus so it seemed appropriate to review the new album.

    This album is pretty solid my only complaints is a lack of Lord Finesse verses and a couple of Fat Joes verses are kinda eh. A.G. sounds the best i’ve heard him in years cause I didn’t really like any of his more recent solo stuff with that talk rapping flow he was using.

    It doesn’t have to sound like Runaway Slave, but it should show some of that same creative energy and soul.

    They could have picked any 15 random beats from the SP 1200 project along with the musical contributions from Primo, Show, and Diamond and it would have been official. Rock Shyt is the only track produced by a no namer that works.

    Don’t give DITC a second pass. They’re capable of better and they know it. They need to step their game up. Maybe the third time will be the charm.

    I wish there was more consistency in terms of putting music out from these guys. There is no question how dope they are, but 3 albums (and that is liberal cuz The Awakening hardly counts as an album) from The Funky Man in a career that spans 25 years is a travesty. Same goes for Diamond!! The Diam Piece was a great line-up on paper, didnt exactly play out well at all. The forgettable Hugh Hefner Chronicles… couple Mix-CD type albums… In retrospect these guys built a career of respect in about 5 years work (1990-1995) after that didnt even matter any more. Catalogues are still better than 99% of today’s music. I will always check for these kats though, regardless of 20 years of somewhat disappointment.

    Some of the tracks they released that didn’t make the album were really good. Anyway I enjoyed the album. Would have liked a few more Finesse rap tracks, but I’m good. Supported the album.

    @TreeXdope

    how or why does ‘The Awakening’ ”hardly count as an album”?
    Just wondered what you meant by that.

  7. TreeXdope says:
    May 16, 2016 at

    @anon

    7 of the 16 tracks were interludes. If you copped the LP it didnt even include Actual Facts. That was a seperate 12″. So the album was technically 15 tracks. 7/15 is just about half an album of interludes. Don’t get me wrong man… I’m a huge Finesse fan, just always kinda viewed The Awakening as like half an album. Vinyl release was tight though… came with an instrumental album as well. God bless them for that!!

    Agreed that ‘The Awakening’ was basically an EP with a lot of skits, although ‘O…Lord’ is better than most people’s entire careers.

    As far as saying ‘They could have picked any 15 random beats from the SP 1200 project’ that’s basically saying you’re expecting them to pretend that it’s still 1992.

  9. Chahleee Chace says:

    Not true Robbie. Because good music is timeless. Galactic Soul and Cinematic Soul don’t sound dated. And we don’t know when the beats on the DITC Studios album were made. For all we know some of those beats are 15 years old.

    Everyone is saying “oh I’m gonna support because it’s DITC” not “cop it cause it’s dope as fuck”.

    They should pretend like it’s 1992. In 1992 if you made some weak ish you would be shunned. If they pretend like it’s 2016 they have a low bar to strive to.

    @Chahlee Chase

    Well said. Agree with you on this: “Everyone is saying “oh I’m gonna support because it’s DITC” not “cop it cause it’s dope as fuck”.

    There was a damn good O.C. jam floating around the net not made the final cut thought was poor decision probably better and rawer works left on the cutting floor. DITC are not getting the right beats, and it doesn’t necessarily have to sound like “92” either.

  11. Robbie says:
    May 17, 2016 at

    @Chahlee: I’m the last person to suggest anyone support something purely on the strength of who it is. My point being that it’s better than I expected, considering this LP could have ended up like the new Puba album.

    MAN all y’all sound like a bunch of bitches the ALBUM is HARD AS HELL STOP ALL THIS CORNY NIT Picking. Cats talk like the love and want THAT GOOD HIPHOP then get on here and complain, complain , complain..I bet none of you coped the album from there Website. If cats was paying attention there’s been so many dope Projects from these cats over the last 5 years, ant nobody gotta support this album for who they are this Project DOPE as FUCK got me locked in the lab ready to go. I was so inspired from this project FOH….

  13. Chahleee Chace says:
    May 22, 2016 at

    @ Dial Tone. Let me guess, you think Royce the 5’9 and Slaughterhouse make classic albums too right?

    No one is nitpicking. The joint just isn’t hot. Sure it’s pure non commercial hiphop, but it’s also average.

    I bought SP 1200 Project. I won’t buy this because it’s not worth my money. I’m not rich. I work a 9 to 5, every dollar counts. I’m not gonna drop $20 just to feel like a member of a fan club.

    I loved the new album! How anyone heard that shit and found things to complain about is beyond me. I feel like these guys are in top form. It impressed me.

    I kinda fucks with it, I feared it would be as bad as last time ’round. I fux more with the sessions version though, cause I dont have to skip Monch’s singing (Im so fuckin tired of this guy, sooo overrated!). Im Down w. what Robbies saying this is better than feared, and besides that, it is impossible to not see it in the light of the climate/year in w. its produced, come on Guys, yall know its not the 90s anymore, no matter how hard it is to comprehend… I 4 one miss the era but its not comming back.
