There’s going to be a Sean Price album produced entirely by Lil’ Fame, which is a true reason for the CRC to celebrate since it means that we don’t have to hear Termanology waste any more Fizzy Womack beats for a little while, but also because they both continue to put in some fine work. That being said, some of these rap team-ups are inevitably better on paper than the finished result. I’m sure DJ Premier and Nas will get around to recording an album in 2050 to a captive audience of fifteen people, but in the meantime I’m still campaigning for an group featuring Grand Daddy I.U., Roc Maciano and Parrish Smith called Strong Island Styling, with Prince Paul on the beats. Since the build your own supergroup topic has already been done here, let’s stick to producer and MC combos.
Here are album five team-ups that I would pay money for:
Redman with Scram Jones.
Willie The Kid with DOOM.
Juju with DJ7L.
Ka with Alchemist.
Tragedy with P Brothers.
I have a couple…Pete Rock and Roc Marc, Donuts era-Dilla and Ghostface and if we can’t get Nas/Premo, Nas gotta bring it full circle and link up with Extra P, preferably with P blowin’ the dust off that SP-1200…
@oska: Good calls. I don’t buy into this myth that using old beat machines makes everything better though. Who wants to mess around with five inch floppy discs in this day and age?
DJ Muggs with MF Grimm would be great.
Horrified that the founder/president of the Conservative Rap Coalition could attempt to undermine the value of the sp-1200’s distinct and inimitable aesthetic. For shame!
@truegrit: I’m just tired of kids thinking that buying an Alesis HR-16 and a Akai S-950 means that they can immediately make ‘Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop.’
@Robbie:
There’s a difference between some similac-on-the-breath youngster jumpin’ on vintage equipment like the SP to fill some imaginary “kepp it real” quota and a legend who helped popularize said equipment. I made that distinction earlier ’cause while Large Pro’s production in the last decade has been alright for the most part, the magic he made on that SP is untouchable.
@oska: Sure, but a lot of the great producers happened to be in their primes when they were using those older machines. Even if they all dusted off their old SP’2 and MPC’s it’s not going to help them recapture that hunger.
Too Short with DJ Premier
Couldn’t be more of a contrast, would have interesting results.
@Caesar: Premier’s ‘In The Trunk’ remix worked out pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CicPEUqDw6I
Jeru the Damaja and Statik Selektah
I’d like a Milano album entirely produced by The Beatnuts. A Marco Polo / Midaz the Beast album would be dope too.
@Robbie
Great remix. I remember in ’92 hearing that on the radio at 2am and never hearing it again. For years I though it was a dream until the youtube diggers unearthed it.
Willie The Kid & Doom is something I never thought of and makes perfect sense that it would be a good combo.
ALC & Ka would be incredible! ALC seems to produce rappers best efforts and puts them out for free no less. Domo, Curren$y, Boldy, and Action Bronson will never put out finer work, as an example.
Styles p large pro. Grap Lewis parker.
Jake One and Raekwon.
Roc Marci and Ghostface. Marci gotta bring the Marcberg’ish drums back tho.
KA X ALC | Roc Marciano X Madlib | Milano W Show/Buckwild | Dirt Platoon X DJ Premier | Joel Ortiz Vs DJ Muggs |
Black Thought & Madlib
ghost and dilla…shoot rae and ghost w/ dilla
back in the days I would of loved a producers on the mic project album by Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock and Large Pro. four horsemen of the apocalypse type shit.
Ghostface Killah & Dj Premier Lp
Kool Keith & MF Doom Lp
Grand Puba Lp produced J Dilla (back in 1995)
Dapper Dan I always wanted to see a full lp BITD by Pete rock, large pro and q tip.
Full lp mid 90s by Grand puba with positive k would have been nice
I also reckon muggs with gfk.
Dres lp with Prince Paul production.
Judging from his stomping remix of ‘At Your Own Risk’, I’d go for Marley Marl producing King Tee circa 1990.
Fat Joe and Showbiz
Kool G Rap & The Bomb Squad
Waiting for the Royal Flush, Mic Geronimo & Mr. Cheeks – Three Da Hard Way
I always wished LL PE Run DMC combined back in the day but nothing?
LL on a Kurtis Mantronik produced album.
Wondering if the Sean P & Lil’ Fame album ever got completed?
De la soul over Count Bass D beats.
Kool keith over Doppelgangaz tracks.
MegaRan over J-Zone production
Tech N9ne over Wu Elements soundscapes.
Paris lacing Ohno beatwork.
E40 and Daddy Kev.
NY Oil and Erick Sermon.
