This will be the last Ghostface post for a while, but since the retail version of Fishscale has been finalised, I thought I’d highlight a couple of things that didn’t make the final cut. “Charlie Brown” didn’t make it, nor did “Murder Goons” (aka “Hot 97”). To really confuse everyone, there seem to be three…
Super Gully – Blood Of A Champion DVD Review
Retreading the familiar ground of an ex-con trying to walk the straight and narrow, the story of Shadow (Bokeem Woodbine) and Sharon (Deborah Cox) is part romantic drama, part Van Damme flick. Before the plot reaches it’s predictable conclusion, the first three-quarters of the Blood of a Champion are pretty enjoyable, as the two leads…
The Fresh One
As one of the least prolific members of the original Flavor Unit, Markey Fresh still made quite an impression based upon his performance on “The King Is Here” alone. A brilliant slice of lo-fi theme music declaring the superiority of New Jersey’s king of the beats, this staple of Red Alert‘s Kiss-FM show exists in…
Blunted Soul – RZA RapPages Producer Profile
All of you production equipment nerds are gonna have a field day on this one, as the RZA drops science about analog vs. digital, samplers he’s messed with, mixing techniques and the whole nine. It’s incredible how influential his sound has been to today’s producers – don’t forget that only a couple of people were…
Thanks Kayslay!
(far right) The Drama King before he discovered fried foods. As a result of Bol pointing out that the XXL site is up, I got my hands on a little Ironman exclusive that didn’t make the album. For those of you who don’t fuck with streaming audio, I flipped it into an mp3. Don’t say…
Super Heavy-Duty Tough Work – 45 King Bootleg LP
This is a strange one. While the logos on the label would have us believe that DJ Mark The 45 King recorded an album for Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam following the hit he gave Jay-Z (“Hard Knock Life”) in 1998, there’s really no reason to think this is anything but a bootlegger scam (the whole “Mark 45…
Bobbito’s Soundcheck – Raekwon
Another Vibe throwback. Too many quotables to mention on this one…especially Rae’s reaction to that Miami shit!
Now, That’s More Like It
While I certainly had some reservations about an album from GFK and Zev, this new leak is renewing my enthusiasm for the project. Ghostface Killah & MF Doom – Angels Rejected album titles for this album (so far): Face/Off The Masked Avengers Ghosts of Doom Doomface Ghostdoom We Got The Internet Goin’ Nuts Pt. 2…
Hearing Every Dope Beat With Dope Voices
Despite the fact that his classic debut single served as the inspiration for the name of his crew, Latee remains as one of the more enigmatic members of the New Jersey collective. Anyone who used to catch Kool DJ Red Alert‘s show on KISS-FM would instantly recognise the block-rocking Fatback riff and earth-shattering kick drum…
Rae And Ghost United
Last Friday, a new Fishscale bootleg/advance hit the “streets” of the internets, but at fourteen tracks deep, I’m 99% sure that it’s nowhere near the offical version (for starters, “Charlie Brown” and “Big Girl” from the sampler aren’t on it). Nevertheless, at least some of these songs will turn up on the real album, so…
Diggin’ In The Crates Video Special
The Vinyl Addicts have outdone themselves with this D.I.T.C. video spectacular. Everything from Lord Finesse‘s “Strictly For The Ladies” to Big L‘s “Holdin’ It Down” is over there. Outstanding stuff.
Bobbito’s Blindfold Test – Large Professor
Truth be told, Vibe magazine pretty much sucked from Issue 0 (yes, they actually put that out). It wasn’t just the numerous pictures of half-naked dudes that made me think that something wasn’t quite right about this Quincy Jones project, most of the reviews and articles were horrible as well. There were some exceptions though,…
