Nice post Robbie. The real curse of Puff is him putting the hit on Tupac & Shug. Shame that Afeni died recently as I was hoping for a civil trial.
Btw the Lox’s “if you think I’m jiggy” is a crap record lyrically but I maintain that the beat is pretty dope.
Mack’s album ‘boring’? always thought exactly the opposite
Missy Elliott and now Bad Boy Ents? I’m not down with the CRC puritanism but c’mon.
Project Funk The World was dope when it came out and it’s dope now. That little intro before Get Down says it all. Nod your head ish. Problem with Mack was that he was just hiphop. Not an easy sell and it’s amazing that Flava in Your Ear was such a big hit. Biggie had the criminal gangsta angle Puff could market.
whatever happened to sauce money?
Man death follows this guy around! What was tha last body count?
Diddy didnt leave a mark ,but a stain. Those remixes are corney.
Montana sucks!
Biggie second album should have been a extended lp!
Craig mack shouldnt have been cut off!
The band can eat a ***
Puffy should never have held a mic and spit.
If he would have only stayed focused with hip hop r n b blends?
I hated Bad Boy (other than Biggie, of course) for what they represented back in the day but looking back on it now, they made a lot of good music. G-Dep was the dopest solo artist after Biggie, imo…
Honestly I’m probably gonna some hate for this but most of the stuff Bad Boy dropped in the late 90s/early 2000s was more enjoyable than a lot that cornball indie rap in that era with Hydra and Tru Criminal being the exception. @doughjoe Sauce Money still drops songs here and there.
SAUCE MONEY WAS NEVER DOWN WITH BAD BOY..HE WAS JAY Z’S HOMIE..PUFF DID PRODUCE ON HIS ALBUM THOUGH..
@Ben Jones: Pretty much.
A lot of the indie releases were, hit or miss (trash if you prefer) during those days, but putting Puff and his ilk on a pedestal is just the opposite end of the spectrum. How come none of his artists had any longevity besides maybe, Faith Evans? When I think of almost any Puff related a song that I liked, the sample source was probably already a hit. I offer up Mace’s first single (whatever it was called) as proof. I’d rather listen to Kool and the Gang in stead of that sh*t. I digress.
@Bug….That’s what the fuck is ^ ! ….” Take hits from the 80’s; does it sound so crazy? ” -Puff
I give Puff 3 originals—‘ Victory ‘ , ‘ All About The Benjamin’s ‘ and ‘ Let’s Get it ‘ …….Other than those it’s still Fuck Tha Shiny Suit Era!
Try Hard contrarianism has done come full circle. Having run out of mediocre B-sides and generic “deep cuts” to jock, the inevitable apotheosis of Try Hard contrarianism is to champion Bad Boy/Puffy. It’s the ultimate up-is-down, black-is-white and day-is-night stance.
@Dino: You’ve just convinced me to turn Unkut into a Loon fansite.
buck 65 fan can’t tell the difference between shilling and historical observation. CRC is all about nuance, kids.
Sorry to break it to you doughjoe but the emperor is not wearing any clothes; not even a thread of nuance.
@Dino: You can read back through the archives and you’ll find that I’ve never flip-flopped on my stance that Talib is not a good rapper and Black Rob is.
what were robs sample clearance issues?
@GX: Bad Boy were too cheap to clear the samples on three or four tracks, so the retail versions are replayed.
I still have love for Ma$e, he carved out a respectable niche in 90’s hip-hop.
Plus, I’m fairly certain that he’s the ONLY rapper to ever appear on studio songs with Big L (American Dream, Uptown Connection, etc.), Biggie Smalls (Mo’ Money Mo’ Problem, Only You, etc.), and Big Pun (Is It You (Deja Vu) Remix).
So, for that reason alone, he should be considered a legend.
