Ten Soundtrack Exclusives That Deserved To Be Singles

Posted on January 9, 2015March 2, 2026 by Robbie Ettelson

Many quality non album cuts have found themselves buried on movie soundtracks over the years. Here are just ten of them.

Tha Alkaholiks – ‘Coast To Coast’

Nice use of the break popularized by Premier‘s ‘Next Level’ remix.

Kam – ‘Every Single Weekend’

Best Kam song by miles.

Fat Joe – ‘I’m Trying To Tell ‘Em’

A forgotten Diamond D / Joey Crack winner.

WC and The MADD Circle – ‘Quick Way Out’

Worthy of inclusion on the the first MADD Circle LP, golden era LA Rap.

Old Dirty Bastard – ‘Ol’ Dirty’s Back’

An appropriately mental song from rap’s greatest mentalist.

Lord Finesse – ‘Set It Off Troop’

Stripped-back era D.I.T.C. material, beat by Showbiz.

Nice & Smooth – ‘Cash In My Hands’

From when these two gentlemen could do no wrong.

Grand Puba – ‘Fat Rat’

Puba embracing the Uptown Records sound with style.

Mobb Deep – ‘Back At You’

A quality Murda Muzik Hell On Earth left-over.

Cypress Hill – ‘Shoot ‘Em Up’

Predictable but still great.

Bonus: OC & Buckwild – ‘What I Represent’

While the America Is Dying Slowly compilation isn’t technically a soundtrack, this track which sounds like an out-take from Word…Life also has nothing to do with jimmy hats.

Ha, I used to play that Tales From the Hood soundtrack on repeat!! NME and Grench ‘Talkin to myself’…any info on that group? That beat was ridiculous.

Good list, “Fat Rat” was my shit back then.

I’d also add Cella Dwellas “Main Aim” and Organized/Ill Rahlos “Late Night Action” from the Soul In The Hole album as well as Black Sheep’s “On The Wall” from Trespass.

Nice. Makes me think of this Excellent track by Slick Rick and Large Professor that was hidden away on the pretty awful soundtrack for Wild Wild West.

Yo Robbie, these various joints you post would be nice as a downloadable comp. (Not a single soundcloud type mp3)

Tupac’s “Definition” from Poetic Justic (The Nice-N-Smooth cut is dope too though)

The trifecta of ’93 Pete Rock & CL Smooth soundtrack bangers the aforementioned Death Becomes You, What’s Next On The Menu from Who’s The Man? and One In A Million from Poetic Justice. Also, Redman’s BDP salute Down Wit Us from How To Be A Player and Lord Finesse’s You Know What I’m About from Trespass.

Oh and Turtle just reminded me, Pete Rock and Large Professor’s The Rap World from High School High…

Sex scene between Fredro Starr and Rhea Perlman in “Sunset Park” is the only decent thing that shout rap retard ever did. That Mobb Deep track is great though, better than the movie deserved, even if Rhea Perlman must have been a fantastic lay back then and maybe still.

  17. donaleski says:

The Show Soundtrack gots bangers all way thru… 2Pac’s “My block”, Biggie’s “Me n my bitch live” on that Zapp break (fatter than the original).
Only the Meth/Red’s “How high” got the treatment; but most of them songs were great, RnB included…
    Good article Robbie, peace D

Loads of great tracks appeared on soundtracks, but wasn’t Back At You a single with the Queen Latifah track? It had a video and everything.

The AIDS compilation had the redone version of Mobb Deep / ACD’s Street Life, the crazy Money Boss track plus the O.C. and Common tracks.

Rhyme and Reason had Rza’s Tragedy, which was a single I think?

High School High had Real Live – Get Down for Mine and Wu Wear. Singles again, though.

That Black and White (??) soundtrack had Mobb Deep’s Don’t Be a Follower.

Winter Warz was bootlegged and then appeared on Don’t Be a Menace at the same time but then shortly after was on Ironman so no longer an exclusive.

Up North Trip was not on the tape version of the Infamous but was on the Don’t Be a Menace OST.

    There’s loads more I guess.

This Kane track from thw Game Over 2 comp was banging. Was it a soundtrack though?

  23. sonny7 says:

Slightly off topic but what about best film scenes soundtracked by a rap track, mine would be the shootout & subsequent car chase in King of New York with Schoolly D’s Am I Black Enough For Ya booming out. Just watched it again for the first time in years on YouTube, still dope. Larry Fishburne’s Jimmy Jump is badass.

Ragtime-I See Ya Jay (Deep Cover)
De La Soul-I Can’t Call It (High School High)
Inspectah Deck & U-God & Street-Semi-Automatic: Full Rap Metal Jacket (High School High)
Large Professor & Pete Rock-The Rap World (High School High)
Red Hot Lover Tone – The Illest (House Party 3)
    Pharcyde-Pandemonium (Street Fighter)
Cutthroats-Stop Lookin At Me (Menace To Society)

The Roots f/Erykah Badu “The ‘Notic” from Men In Black. Some of yall might think I’m crazy for this one but I always liked this joint for some reason: Son of Bazerk’s “What Could Be Better Bitch” from Juice. Let me go WAY back on yall. I think Fab 5 Freddy’s Down By Law (Wild Style) would have had an ill video…
