Ten Examples of Kid Rap That Aren’t Embarrassing

Posted on January 20, 2015December 24, 2019 by Robbie Ettelson

CHI_EDIT

Kid Rap became a fad in the early 90’s, but youngsters rapping has been going on since the beginning of hip-hop. Matter of fact, some of them had more to offer than shaved heads and shouted choruses. Tragedy and LL were sonning their peers back when they were 14 and 16, respectively. Meanwhile, Jeff from the De La Soul skits never made an album while those Quo clowns got Redman and Aaron Hall features on their album. Where’s the justice?

Pookey Blow – Get Up (And Go To School)

12 year old Rap Attack from the nephew to the other Mr. Magic (Connecticut). Awkwardly charming or just plain nervous?

2 Low – Class Clown

The only song on the Funky Lil Brotha album that sounded like a classic Rap-A-Lot song instead of some post-Chronic synth jam.

Le Juan Love – My Hardcore Rhymes

Quality Kid Rap from Miami. Shout-out to DJ Man.

Illegal feat. Lord Finesse and A.G. – On Da M.I.C.

Dallas Austin figured out he just might be able to trick DITC fans into copping this for a Lord Finesse and A.G. verse and a Diamond D beat. He was right.

Chi-Ali – Shorty Said Nah

Chi-Ali (with help from Al’ Tariq possibly) spookyily predicted his own future on this song, if you replace the girl with some ‘rare CD’s.’

Shyheim – Napsack

The original theme song for backpackers everywhere. RNS put in some fine work on this LP.

Da Youngstas – Mad Props

These kids released four albums? More proof that Lawrence ‘LG’ Goodman doesn’t fuck around.

A+ feat. Prodigy of Mobb Deep – Gusto

The guy best known for being Erykah Badu‘s old label mate.

De La Soul feat. Jeff – Mack Daddy On The Left

A lot of folks thought this kid was Chi-Ali. He wasn’t. He was Trugoy‘s cousin from L.I.

LL Cool J – I Need A Beat

Dude was sixteen when he recorded this, so he qualifies.

Hot Day feat. Super Kids – Go Queensbridge

At fourteen, MC Jade aka Tragedy aka Intelligent Hoodlum was flexing a vocab that rapper’s twice age would struggle with.

Hi-5 feat. Prodigy – Too Young

Soundtrack P gets busy, age fifteen, on this album cut featured in Boyz N The Hood.

Does Nas’ verse on Live At The BBQ count? Dude was 17 when he laid that down and no telling how old he was when he actually wrote it. Also, no mention of Special Ed? Dude was 16 when he came out…

Never fails to amuse me how you can hear Trag’s voice break on the Intelligent Hoodlum album. An effect that Das Efx tried to replicate without success

Really liked “crewz pop” by the da youngstas, “head or gut” by illegal, you can’t beat the sound of a 12 year old threatening to shoot you.

Braille dropped his debut album “Life first …half the battle” aged 16.
I believe Benefit was also 16 when he dropped “B.E.N.E.F.I.T.”
UK crew The 57th Dynasty had a prominent kid member called Lil’ Monsta. His voice broke on the 2nd album.

Shyheim released an album called “From the bottom.” Just sayin….
