This one took a while (although not as long as the five month delay for the 2018 version) on account of just how prolific most rappers are these days without the shackles of record label schedules and the general proliferation of the Conservative Rap Coalition approved sound.
The rules are simple – one song per album, so anyone who dropped multiple LP’s can grab a number of spots. My main take away from 2019 was that Showbiz and DJ Muggs absolutely slayed ’em, which brought a glimmer of warmth to my cold, shriveled heart.
Please submit all complaints on the back of a postcard, or email me for the CRC fax number.
Download: The Unkut 40 Oz. 2019
Track list:
40 ‘Kelly’s Korner’ – Westside Gunn feat. Fat Joe
Included purely for Joey Crack’s wonderful contribution.
39 ‘Education’ – Freddie Gibbs and Madlib feat. Yasiin Bey and Black Thought
This sounds like it was recorded on an old cassette with tissue paper stuffed into the top, but Thought @ Work is putting in that work so it’s worth sitting through the other two raps.
38 ‘Don’t Get Lined Up’ – Eto and Flee Lord’
DJ Green Lantern channels Muggs circa Temples of Boom to excellent effect.
37 ‘GT3’ – Meyhem Lauren and DJ Muggs
Shout out to Pace Won’s ‘Sunroof Top’, now with extra car engine sounds.
36 ‘Let Me Tell Ya’ – Smif N Wessun feat. Rick Ross
Not sure what the connection between Rawse and these BCC veterans is (it’s weed, right?), but I always welcome the chance to hear him rapping over something CRC-approved.
35 ‘By Any Means’ – Smoke DZA and Benny The Butcher
Nice Pete Rock throwback for Benny to get loose over.
34 ‘Seizure’ – Rome Streetz
An example of Drum-Free Rap that works, thanks to a loop that seems to build momentum the longer it runs.
33 ‘Crowns for Kings’ – Benny The Butcher feat. Black Thought
A textbook example of Black Though obliterating the microphone with a seemingly effortless intensity.
32 ‘The Chase’ – Ghostface Killah feat. Sun God
This is basically ‘Run 2k19’ but I have no objections whatsoever.
31 ‘Jungle Book’ – Stack Skrilla and Tha God Fahim
Great loop that doesn’t outstay it’s welcome.
30 ‘Angel’ – XP The Marxman and Icerocks
Queens based producer Icerocks smashed this one for the LA born XP.
29 ‘Harry O’ – The Alchemist feat. Roc Marciano
Shots fired at flat earthers.
28 ‘Combat’ – Danny Brown
Here’s hoping Q-Tip serves up this sort of material for some New Yawkers in 2020.
27 ‘PSA Drugfest 2003 (Sleeveless Minks)’ – Quelle Chris
Not sure what’s going on here, but it works!
26 ‘Have Cloak Will Travel’ – The Doppelgangaz
The thinking man’s 2 Lice Crew.
25 ‘The Greatest To Ever Do It’ – Your Old Droog
The best Droog performance since ‘No Message’.
24 ‘Chivas Blanc’ – Diamond D
Still the best producer on the mic.
23 ‘Paper To Spend’ – Agallah feat. Rome Streetz
These kind of beats are why I keep checking for 8 Off again and again.
22 ‘Cobra Commando’ – DJ Muggs and Tha God Fahim
Muggs is on a helluva good streak at the moment. Noise is back.
21 ‘Everything To Gain’ – Papoose and A.G.
Only Showbiz could make me check for a Papoose record in this day and age – and it comes off something lovely.
20 ‘Jewelry’ – Willie The Kid and DUS
WTK is still one of the most consistent CRC troopers out there.
19 ‘Fine Eating’ – Daniel Son and Futurewave
Cheers to the P Brothers for putting me onto this guy when he appeared on their EP last year.
18 ‘Injected With Gin’ – Illa Ghee
Ghee has a rare knack for the kind fluid rhyme schemes that are becoming increasingly rare.
17 ‘It’s Time’ – AZ
The Visualiza over ‘It’s A Demo’ was a great start to last year.
16 ‘Tsunami Kings’ – Agallah feat. Onaira 7
Understandable smooth shit that murderers CRCer’s move with.
15 ‘A Righteous Mind Is A Demons Downfall’ – Tha God Fahim and The Architect
The modern day ‘When You See A Devil Smash Him’. Lakim Shabazz would be proud.
14 ‘Waffle Brunch’ – Daniel Son and Futurewave
The kind of anti-social, non-progressive cold weather rap that made the Conservative Rap Coalition what it is today. Prodigy would have loved this.
13 ‘Homie’ – DJ Muggs and Eto
I first caught wind of Eto on Agallah’s ‘Coral Reef’, and this year Muggs provided him with the perfect soundtrack to the nihilistic tendencies of Hell’s Roof.
12 ‘Multiple Stab Woundz’ – Him-Lo and Giallo Point
Breaking Bells at the Nicole Brown Simpson crime scene.
11 ‘Spread’ – Agallah feat. Peedi Crakk, Malik B, Atare Godspeed and M.A.R.S. Co-Op
Brooklyn – Philly connect like Voltron on the only posse cut that made an impression in 2019.
10 ‘Chasing Ghosts’ – Your Old Droog feat. Roc Marciano
Superb performances from everybody involved – the beat from Ohbliv in particular.
09 ‘Sage’ – Vado feat. AZ
AZ is firing on all cylinders here, courtesy of 40 Oz. regular Vado who seems to drop at least one great song every other year or so.
08 ‘Bomb Shelter’ – Roc Marciano feat. Willie The Kid
Miles Davis Rap.
07 ‘Black Spoons’ – Conway
Souls Assassins teaming up with Conway The Machine is a match made in Hardcore Rap heaven.
06 ‘I Ain’t Shit’ – Styles P
The Ghost might be my favourite rapper who doesn’t rhyme over enough beats I like…but when he does? Fuhgeddaboudit.
05 ‘Transformerz’ – Clever 1
Clever-1 joins Craig G, Kurtis Blow and 7L & Esoteric in the obscure yet essential Transformer Rap category.
04 ‘Rose Petal Bearerz’ – Him-Lo
Da Buze Brovaz keep stacking that green like McDowell’s. Fun fact: Coming To America 2 is due out at the end of this year (chea!)…as well as Beverley Hills Cop IV (nope!).
03 ‘They Ain’t Fucking With Us’ – Sean Price and Lil Fame feat. Rockness Monsta
The late, great Sean P rapping over a great Fizzy Womack beat and a guest spot from his Heltah Skeltah partner? It’s as good as I’d hoped.
02 ‘Animal Shit’ – David Bars and Showbiz
It was a tough call between this and the equally dope ‘Unkut’ ‘Uncut’, but that beat is undeniable.
01 ‘Boulevard Author’ – Milano and Showbiz
Uptown and The Bronx demonstrate exactly how it’s done, as only true masters of their craft can. Tell ’em!
Glad to see Tha God on here! Mach Hommy still doesn’t tickle your fancy? And how about Left Lane Didon and Jay Nice? Left Lane especially seems like someone you’d appreciate. Looking forward to check out the songs on the list I didn’t catch myself
no contributions from “kiss da converse” and “the pen relays”? damn, there’s a multiple tracks on these 2 albums that shit on most of the stuff you listed … same goes for monche’s “palindrome”

@kool max power: Can’t believe I forgot Converse – and I bought the effin’ vinyl! Hadn’t heard of that Grilchy comp until now either…
@say it don’t spray it: Mach and Crimeapple were the only Muggs projects that didn’t hit the mark for me as far as the raps. I’ll check for those other two artists though.
@Robbie: I’m positive “the pen relays” will change your opinion about 2019 posse cuts…
@kool max power: Looks like Westside Gunn and Freddie Gibbs are getting the chop for version 1.2!
Supreme Drip is crazy. Buddy went in with some scandalous raps
This is the best 40 Oz ever maybe!
1000 Shotz – Sauce Heist x Ty Da Dale x Rahiem Supreme x Ankhlejohn x Al Divino x Estee Nack x Jamal Gasol x Rome Streetz, the hardest posse track of 2019 didn’t make the cut, Robbie? C’mon man, haha
@esto: Is that a real song or are just busting my chops over here?
@Robbie: https://nesismakinbeats.bandcamp.com/album/1000-shotz-sauce-heist-x-ty-da-dale-x-rahiem-supreme-x-ankhlejohn-x-al-divino-x-estee-nack-x-jamal-gasol-x-rome-streetz
^ hardest posse cut? hmmm … some of these dudes sound like amateurs…
oops…I slept on that statue of limitations EP.
I would never bust your chops, Robbie, haha. It’s real, I made the beat. You know I’ve been patiently waiting for you to bless me with the CRC seal of approval!
>amateurs
Nah, all those dudes are dope. Maybe you haven’t heard of them, kool max power, but plenty of people have. And most if not all those cats have been featured on other people’s joints heavy in 2019. Rome Streetz even made Robbie’s list.
So, is that Milano #1? Is this list in order? Cuz its def my #1. Milano, you kilt that shit.
If this is the best of 2019 then thank fock I was born in 1972!!
@Dan E Fresh thankfully I was born in 1980 so I don’t have to listen to the same sh1t for the rest of my life
FLAMES!

I enjoyed Kwest (Tha Madd Lad) ‘S.P.I.T.R.’ the most last year. Always dug that dood…
