don’t put famous breaks in the background during voiceovers/interviews, make them with no drums for comedic purposes

a close up of DMC going: “the first time I heard (insert ground-breaking golden age artist/group name) i went WHAT THE FVCK IS THIS ?!?

I AGREE ABOUT A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT OTHER RAP LABELS..TOMMY BOY AND JIVE WOULD BE GREAT..

These docs are basically an opportunity for whoever’s being interviewed to give massive handjobs to whoever they’re talking about.

And also to note, it’s annoying how the word “genius” is liberally thrown around to describe just about anyone. A genius is the guy who invented a lightbulb or the toilet. Not some joker who looped 4 bars of a popular hit from yesteryear and threw some sampled drums under it.

Stretch and Bobbito doc is dope.

Spot on. There’s a BBC4 doc with the terrible title of ‘Hip Hop World News’ which I was expecting to be awful, but thanks to Rodney P’s presentation- was brilliantly put together. It’s got some proper fresh perpectives and also briefly serves as a reminder that Lord jamar is a bit of a dick. Can’t find a link to watch online- but it’ll be out there somewhere. Worth your time.

The Rodney P doc is decent, mainly because Rodney knows his stuff. Could’ve been a whole different thing if they let Charlie Sloth loose on it.

Yeah, if you focus on the “birth of hip-hop” documentaries, you’re going to see lots of trash. But there are some underground rap documentaries — I just read about a Warren G one, and another about the Detroit beat scene. Of course, they are going to suffer from bias, but at least they cover different perspectives.

the birth of hip hop took too many cues from disco, punk, rock, to find the true birth you need to look back into the early 70’s…

there are some good documentaries out there , but Viacom is not funding those guys. some one has got to team up with some ralph McDaniels from video music box , he got the gems!

the stretch and bobbito movie was raw. We got some good dudes doing the podcast radio show thing, these guys got to make the push and steer the industry in the right direction. NORE Joe Budden, TK Kirkland, Ed Lover, Chuck D, lets make that noise !

Excellent read. I would check for a Flavor Unit doc. There was a lot of talent on that label.
