Download: A Salute To DJ Muggs Productions

Posted on September 1, 2016August 4, 2023 by Robbie Ettelson

From his humble beginnings as the DJ for 7A3, DJ Muggs introduced a whole new sound as part of Cypress Hill before finding chart success with ‘Insane In The Brain’ and ‘Jump Around.’ Initially choosing only to work with his immediate associates, it wasn’t until later in his career that he recruited a wider field of rappers to work with him on the Soul Assassins compilations. He also dipped is toes into remixing everyone from U2 to Depeche Mode to George Michael, but let’s not hold that against him as I’m sure he was generously compensated for his efforts.

@Robbie – 7A3’s album was called “Coolin In Cali” – in case you forgot and couldn’t dig it out to include here :-)

“one of my all time greatest as well” hence the sarcasm….

Great comp on one of the most consistent producers in hiphop ever. His vs-albums with Planet Asia, Sick Jacken, Gza and Ill Bill is really good as well, should be CRC-approved no?

  3. Robbie says:
    September 1, 2016 at

@Sean G: I have that album but wasn’t sure which songs Muggs did, if any.

@Pentagram: The beats on those didn’t hit me as hard as the earlier stuff.

Yep for sure Robbie – I just had the same thought and checked and he isn’t credited for any production duties – pardon my bad :-)

Oh I always thought muggs produced that 7a3 album and was thinking the same thing about excluding it. Glad you cleared that up.

So What’cha Want remix was a classic. Also enjoyed the planet Asia And gza Ones from the more recent crop.

Good point on reviewing Muggs, however if those tracks u selected Robbie are the ones u like most, it should have been a tribute to Cypress compilation?
    Peace tho

Notable omissions = “That’s Coke” by La Coka Nostra and “Kill Devil Hills” by Muggs & Ill Bill.

DJ Muggs was dope (that horse sample took him a long-long way). It all went downhill when he started trying to make sound module beats without first learning how to play a keyboard.

I loved that early 90s sound that Muggs created, still love it, especially that first CH album, Shamrocks & Shenanigans by HOP is still dope. Muggs certainly got a lot of mileage (& dough) out of his Chess records collection.
Gonna listen to this & Muddy Waters ‘Electric Mud’ later on.
    Nice one Rob.

Could have all been from the 1st Cypress Hill & Funkdoobie album. Leaving out ‘Stoned is the way of the walk” or the joint from the Juice soundtrack is suspect!

Props tho for that Babalu Bad Boy cut…you had to get dusty for that one!

  11. PL says:
    September 1, 2016 at

Latin Lingo had to have been a close to making the cut.

That first cypress hill lp is a classic, “we had to tear this mf up” by ice cube is also a massive standout cut. Definitely the guy to go to around 1992 for beats.

Yes sir, MUGGS does not get enough props for his earlier work, groundbreaking shit if you ask me…..One of the most over looked cuts is “Intellectual Dons” by CALL OF THE WILD…..Pure rawness….https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DtyNs4bCRo

  15. JReynolds says:

Respect for this! So many choices! A true legend! The Soul Assassin’s sound was huge in the 90’s. Major misses from this tribute are Decisions decisions and Heavy weights from Soul Assassins Vol 1. But the most glaring is We all die one day from Obie Trice’s first album. Eminem and Co pulled Muggs back from the mashup/rave scene to rekindle his beef with the Source magazine. Muggs dropped this heatrock putting the final nail in Ray and the crew’s coffin! Classic banger!

Nothing from DJ Muggs & Sick Jacken’s “Legend of The Mask and The Assassin?” Dope album.

  17. Wait a second says:
    September 4, 2016 at

Didn’t Joe the butcher Nicolo co produce all the early Cypress Hill classics?

  18. Robbie says:

@Wait: He may have, but they’re still eligible.

  19. Kevin T says:
