Hurby ‘Lug Bug’ Azor played a big part in exposing a different style of Queens rap to the world as his Idol Makers crew concentrated on dressing fly, club hopping and bagging the opposite sex, largely favoring story-telling over the classic brag and boast technique. Hurby’s appreciation of go-go beats, DMX shakers and classic breakbeats produced some dance floor classics before he broke through to the pop charts with Salt-N-Pepa’s ‘Push It’ and into the movies via Kid ‘N Play‘s Houseparty franchise. After producing a couple of records for MC Shan‘s white reggae artist Snow in 1995, Hurby vanished from the music scene altogether. Here are what I consider to be his sixteen finest moments behind the boards.

Hurb is the man for his time/era. Marley and craig g went at him back in the day for sounding too commercial at the time and I think for working with an artist Marley worked with. Not really too sure on the reason but dude held his own and was the producer of a crew that actually had more/bigger hits than the juice crew. I believe he was even connected to Howie T (another producer that never gets props and deserves his own compilation…. Hint Hint). Lol. Nice work Robbie.
Dude is def responsible for a lot of memorable joints in the 80s. Even Marley Marl and Craig went at him for unknown reasons. Maybe over a beat or something. Anyway, I believe Hurby even had small ties with Hitman Howie Tee (another producer that deserves the compilation treatment – Hint Hint). I believe at the time he may have had the bigger laugh being that his joints actually made more money than Marley but over time Marley just had the bigger influence. There’s not even a need for a Marley comp from anyone being that it’s just gonna have the joints everyone knows of appose to rare/very hard to find songs. But the other unsung heroes like Hurb derserve it. Good looks Robbie.
I saw Kid from Kid n Play at my local bar and first thing I asked him is what happened to Hurby. He told me dude is like the Black Great Gatsby. We ended up drinking for several hours and I got to hear some incredible stories.
