Maybe we should blame Puff. After all, he invented the remix.
Two things. 1. Craig Mack’s album actually didn’t tank. Project: Funk Da World actually went gold to accompany the platinum Flava In Ya Ear and gold Get Down. Biggie just blew up and shifted the direction of the label so much that Craig didn’t fit in anymore. 2. LL didn’t change his verse on 4,3,2,1. He made Canibus change HIS, then dissed him anyway, sparking arguably the most unnecessary beef of all time. Actually, The BDP/Juice Crew beef started on some BS as well, I will agree though that Flava In Ya Ear remix killed the posse cut, at least on a mainstream level.
I thought whats-his-name invented the remix :)
What’s His Name ain’t invent shit, lol…
@oska: Didn’t LL tell Cannibus to change his verse to take out the bit that irked him and then took shots at him with a new verse himself? As far as Mack’s album, it tanked as far as poor reviews and reception from fans as far as I’m concerned.
@Robbie.
I believe that’s correct. From what I recall, Canibus wasn’t even taking shots at him – he was supposed to be honouring LL but it was misinterpreted.
Lord finesse interview pt 2. Where is it?
I still enjoy Project: Funk the world to this day. Compared to today’s shit Mack was rapping like Nas.
@blackmoneymoses: It’s an exclusive for the book.
@Dmfslimm
Agreed…
Was happy that the article didn’t end without mention of “1,2 pass It” although I hadnt heard this remix before–the original and the original remix are classics as far as I’m concerned; didn’t “Flava in Ya ear” remix have shots thrown at Craig Mack by BIG?
…also love/hate thoughts on these songs: “24 hours to live” ; any Boot Camp Clik posse cut; Dr. Dre associated posse cuts (“ain’t no fun”, “lay low”, “bitches ain’t shit”, “the watcher 2” etc) and Canadian classic posse cuts (“northern touch” , “still too much” , “ol time killin”)
@Pravin: Not sure, Biggie fired back at The Roots for ‘What They Do’ though.
@Robbie, “More guns than roses/ frozen- shaking in their boots, invisible Bully like the Gooch/ disappear…..
Remember the Different Strokes. Arnold invisible bully was the Gooch. He never called out the Roots. If more
confirmation is needed, peep Juan Epstein podcast feat. Chris Rock & Questlove. You know I always wondered why people thought he dissed the Roots !!
I loved Roll Wit The Flavor every bit as much as Scenario or The Symphony
All the remixes mentioned are fuckin classics…the FIYE remix changed the game for worse cause it was natural or organic..all Puff the vulture did was take the hottest out n put em together which is how its been ever since…kinda diminishes shit like 4,3,2,1, n shit for me..
Craig Mack lp was trash but all the 12′ singles were great…Makin Moves Wit Puff got an ill fuckin beat..Get Down/Remix too n FIYE is a classic
Craig Mack has an interesting story, doesn’t he? EPMD roadie, etc.
@silent: True. ‘Get Retarded’ is great as well.
I read a story once where someone claimed to have worked with him as an intern or something? It’s disappeared. All that turns up is that he did or didn’t join a cult or something.
The video with him in the cult is easy to find on youtube…
