What Old Rap Albums Need To Be Re-Issued And Forced Down The Throats Of The Young Peoples?

Posted on April 28, 2014December 24, 2019 by Robbie Ettelson

While we recover from the collective circle jerk that has been celebrating Nas’ first album, let us consider some long forgotten rap essentials that should be mandatory listening to any music fans under 25 in order that they don’t repeat the same mistakes from the past and understand what good rap music should sound like.

I’ll set it off and suggest Akinyele‘s Vagina Diner for starters…

Do you think the young people even pay attention to all these 25th anniversary, hip-hop classic, documentary retrospective special reissue stuff, or is just us old folk entertaining ourselves?

@Werner von Wallenrod, sadly, mostly us old folks entertaining ourselves.

Any Gang starr album (except “No Mr Nice Guy” which by the way is 25 years old!!) or Jeru the Damaja’s primo produced albums. ATCQ’s “midnight marauders” or “low end theory”. For west coast’s soon to be forgotten classics, I’d add one Alkaholiks album (too many dope albums to mention)

In the years BC (Before Chronic) for me there were 2 definitive West Coast albums that all the young ones should be schooled on – ‘Death Certificate’ which several peeps have already nominated and Above The Law – ‘Livin’ Like Hustlers’ – a PHENOMENAL album which never got the recognition it deserved. I blame the long shadow of NWA and it’s terminally wack album cover. Likewise on the East Coast – Stetsasonic ‘In Full Gear’ needs a reissue – so under-rated and still sounds fresh today. Apart from ‘Float On’.

Similarly, a lot of artists have made their old albums available via bandcamp, ITunes and Google Music.
