No Country For Old (Rap) Men: Can Dr. Dre Redefine The Sound of Rap…Again?

Posted on August 5, 2015May 7, 2024 by Robbie Ettelson

My new editor over at Acclaim asked me to predict what Compton is going to sound like, resulting in a perfect example of the old adage ‘Be careful what you wish for.’

No Country For Old (Rap) Men: Can Dr. Dre Redefine The Sound of Rap…Again?

He raps over a DJ Premier beat. Other than that, I have little interest in this. Judging from the guest list, this is shaping up to be something awful.

Btw, where the fuck is The Black Nigga That They Call Ren? Utter disgrace that he wasn’t given so much as a skit. This album’s gonna be trash.

I’m a little surprised to see Cold 187um given the fact that Dre pretty much stole the whole g-funk blueprint from Above The Law.

  3. Fosterakahunter says:
    August 6, 2015 at

Seems also-ran. I don’t hold any hope for it, nor do I really care. That line-up sounds like trash, and Dre seems tired.

I’m not interested in this “Compton” album, just as I was not interested in the last iteration of the supposed “Detox” album.

From the tracklisting, “Compton” looks like “Aftermath Presents 2.0”.

And the last time “Detox” was talked about, it looked like a Summer Jam lineup instead of the cohesive crew-assisted effort that its two predecessors were. IMO Dre is still Top 5/10 but he’s at least 8 years too late.

  5. Jesse says:
    August 6, 2015 at

Agreed Robbie. Not getting my hopes up for this.

    @BEN

I agree with you a hundred percent, that’s the straight up truth…

All you bitter haters are sooo wrong! lol I’m on my second listen, and Dre did it again! The album is amazing! Dre is The GOAT producer of all time and this finale proves it. Going to be a long time till Hip Hop gets this kind of greatness again so might as well listen and celebrate this shit! Life is too short to hate and miss greatness when it drops.

  9. Al says:
    August 7, 2015 at

Seriously? I’ve only listen to the snippets on iTunes but every single song sounded fucking wack to me. Didn’t hear one redeeming beat. Granted I’ve not listened to every song fully but I’m not hearing anything remotely close to greatness…

  10. Quazdaillz says:
    August 7, 2015 at

The world already accepts Compton as an instant classic. It is what it is. To everyone saying it isn’t a great album you are in a very small minority here.

Of course one album can’t please everybody and that’s understandable, so of course there are going to be those that aren’t feeling it. There has never been an album or a song in music history that everyone liked.

Animals though should hit with the regulars here though. DJ Premier co-produced that one. That song is fucking dope!

“The world already accepts Compton as an instant classic. It is what it is. To everyone saying it isn’t a great album you are in a very small minority here.”

Really? I mean, come on now…did you really just write that? I’m not saying it’s not a great album, but come on man, did you really type that?

  12. Quazdaillz says:
    August 7, 2015 at

Yeah I did type that. I mean every word. INSTANT CLASSIC

The Chronic and 2001 were both instant classics, yet a lot of people still needed time to get acclimated to the sound of those. Compton is no different. It will go down as an undeniable body of work just like the other two.

  13. ihatework says:
    August 9, 2015 at

heard a few tracks so far and wasn’t feeling it, and those were the ones without all the singing and bullshit. at this point i just hope the movie is easier to watch than this album is to listen to. btw how the fuck is ren nowhere to be found on here, disgraceful.

  14. Al says:
    August 9, 2015 at

Listened to the whole album a couple of times know…not sure how I got through it without my ears bleeding it’s that bad. Only the Snoop song is anywhere close to decent.

Banging The Fabreeze Brothers LP afterwords flushed that shit outta my ears thank God…

  15. Dmfslimm says:
    August 9, 2015 at

Reading these comments I can say all yall are buggin. It’s not a classic but it’s not what yall saying it is. Live with the album first before you trash it. It’s definitely replay worthy.

  16. frank says:
    August 9, 2015 at

I agree with Dmfslimm, it’s certainly got some goodness on it -and some cuts I’m not so bothered with. Definitely worth checking out and only time will say if this reaches classic status which I doubt as his last 2 albums could never be eclipsed…

  17. Caesar says:
    August 9, 2015 at

I listed once and certain songs twice. The best part about the album is the mix. And the intro is well done. Then it’s downhill. As far as genre defining, not really. It sounds like he mimicked whatever sound is popular now and made it bigger and cleaner. Some of the songs even sound like Yeezus leftovers.

Eminem drops a forgettable verse with is annoying shout flow towards the end, over an equally forgettable beat. Night and day from his verses on 2001 which were perfect. Everyone else is mediocre or slightly above average. Probably Genocide is my favorite song. The beat is the most original. And Kendrick Lamar doesn’t sound like an evil muppet for once.

This isn’t a bad album by any means. But not a classic imo.

  18. doughjoe says:
    August 9, 2015 at

half this album is built to be rap radio white noise for the next two months and then never heard from again. It listens more like a carefully thought out investment project than an “instant classic”. I shan’t be copping.

  19. oskamadison says:
    August 9, 2015 at

“Instant classic”? I don’t know about that but it’s not wack. If this is really his last hurrah, it would have been nice to have the Chronic crew up there and maybe some sort of tribute to Nate Dogg. Out of 5, I give it a 3.25…

  20. bboycult says:
    August 9, 2015 at

My brah Oska …w/the educated opinion I can trust! Peace to you brah!

Smack FIRE out a lying ass rapper 1X 4 Sean P!!

  21. Quazdaillz says:
    August 9, 2015 at

SMH you guys are acting like classic albums are beyond critique, and because you feel like you can sit and be a critic and tear something down it means it’s not a classic.

Every classic album had it’s faults, Every classic album had people who wasn’t fucking with it. I know people that have never fucked with anything from Thriller to Illmatic to Cuban Linx, do these couple of assholes opinions lessen the stature and importance of these albums? No!

The other thing is, Compton isn’t made for the tastes of the majority of readers of this site. It’s not a old school regional or current internet based boom bap classic that’s just about finding wack dollar bin records to sample and rapping about rap. Compton is a classic album period and encapsulates so much more than boom bap ever could.

There’s influences from many sub genres of Hip Hop as well as other genres of American Black Music mixed in with just straight Hip Hop. The genius of this album is that everything is harmoniously mixed into one cohesive and seriously dope project.

I’ll say it again, the “People” have already deemed this a classic album, and I mean people in the broadest sense here. Go check what everyone is saying and the convos everywhere about this album. The shit is beyond and way out of the hands of “conservative” Hip Hop fans.

  22. Al says:
    August 10, 2015 at

The people can say what they want…it’s still shit. If Dre’s name wasn’t on it I’d wager the people would tell a different story. The people labelling this a classic are probably the same hipster crowd that rock their wack Beats by Dre thinking they are high end ‘phones…

But that’s just my opinion and we all have different tastes so respect if you like it.

  23. D-Double says:
    August 10, 2015 at

WHY EVEN MENTION THIS WACK PIECE OF SHIT ALBUM!!!!!
DRE the bitch who NEVER made a beat in his life.
People who like this album also think Eminem is dope and think 2 pac was a great MC lol. And like that corn ball Kendrick.
PEOPLE WHO LIKE THIS ALBUM ARE RADIO LISTENING CORN BALL SHEEP WHO NEVER HEARD “flava unit”, “Just-Ice”, KA, Positive K albums, Kool G Rap and NEVER heard RAKIM’S albums.
FUCK WACK ASS DRE ,EMINEM, 2 PAC AND ALL THEIR FANATICS WHO NEVER HEARD A BIZZY BOY ALBUM.
    DRE= Most overrated producer ever.

  24. D-Double says:
    August 10, 2015 at

THIS ALBUM IS FOR WACK ASS RADIO CORN BALLS WHO THINK EMINEM AND 2 PAC ARE THE BEST RAPPERS.
WACK RADIO BULLSHIT WITH AUTO TUNES AND TRAP RAPPERS.
WHY GIVE WACK ASS DRE ANY EXPOSURE? I thought this was a Hip Hop site not a Hip Pop.
FUCK KENDICK LAMAR’S WACK ASS TOO.

Bandwagons are fun to ride, but often overcrowded and smelly.

  26. GNG says:
    August 10, 2015 at

I’ll just re-echo my sentiments….I have no desire to listen to it. That said, it may be dope (classic) by today’s standards, but I’m looking for something that’s dope by DRE standards (groundbreaking). After years of second, third & quadruple guessing himself if Dre thinks this is his best, it may be a reflection of the times.
