Andrew Emery (aka Drew Huge of Fatlace) penned a piece on 50 Cent’s recent fiscal hiccups/tactics for The Guardian this week, and as one might imagine the comment section was chock-full of outraged rap haters. The real keepers, of course, are the contributions from annoyed backpackers and Defenders Of The True School. These type of incidents can be broken into the following basic categories:
1. The ‘ignorant journalist’ clause.
Kovno:
Andrew, if you think 50 Cent is hip hop you don’t really understand hip hop.
2. The ‘Rap Vs. Hip-Hop’ debate, which may be the most tiresome concept ever put forth in the history of music debate.
paul salt:
Jurassic 5. De la soul. Hip hop
50 pence, jay zed, Kanye west. Rap
That’s the difference in my book.
3. The ‘Rap = Crap’ guy.
Skore711:
You forgot to mention that the majority of them are doing this over music that they didn’t have the talent to write themselves, relying on samples of others work that anyone with a basic knowledge of ctrl+v can slap together in a budget music programme.Few hip hop ‘stars’ actually deserve the accolades they’re given though they do exist – Dr Dre & Missy Elliott would be the 2 most talented I can think of offhand but then they are also music producers and would likely do well with any music genre they were interested in.
4. The aging Bob Dylan fan.
planetwreckerme:
Done right is is an art form. A nice Jewish wrote a brilliant rap song (YouTube search “subterranean homesick blues”) ((Perhaps this gentleman should peep Bob’s mad skills on this Kurtis Blow song.))
5. The savior of the underground.
pabloelbrujo:
Do you know who Mf grimm is?
Do you know who O.C. is ?Neither of those guys had a film about themselves or a Playstation game. ((To be fair, Grimm released a graphic novel.))
Ps. Check out OC’s lyrics about what Hip Hop is about – I would put a link but I think you need some work to do to find out what Hip Hop is about because you obviously haven’t done it here.
5. The militant political rap guy.
WinstonX:
They lamblast Diddy, Kanye West and Lil Wayne because they are all whack! They don’t represent the black struggle they represent Versace, Tom Ford, LV etc You want rappers who represent the struggle talk to me about Chuck D, KRS, Guru, Immortal Technique!
6. The middle-aged breakdancer.
BigJohnFX:
Being an original B-boy from the 80`s I am quite qualified to understand hip-hop.This is hilarious.
I am able to view this not as some tragic Shakespearian tragedy that has befallen a `noble savage/folk hero/man of the people/underdog` but as comeuppance for someone who has for years richly deserved it.
Now his chickens have come home to roost.
What a GUNiT…
7. The comedian.
Dapperchap:
I know way can’t they just move to the country buy a farm become the squire and make cheese or Wagyu beef just like ageing rockers do! Or they could hold a 50th birthday party inspired by the court of Versailles.
8. The guy who hates jazz and actually makes a half-decent point.
jet199:
When hip-hop started there were plenty of jazz records knocking about which had maybe two or three seconds of genius, original music and half an hour of standard jazz circle-jerk. So the smart hip hop kids said, lets cut out the crap and just keep the good stuff and so sampling was born. Sampling is part of hip hop and one of the reasons it is the most successful music on the planet, the best tracks cut any boring or redundant sounds and have interest all the way through.

This reminds me of youtube comment sections where kids will post comments on some shitty 80’s or 90’s rap song and say things like “This dat real hip hop!” or “Man they never make songs like this anymore”. Honestly who gives a shit if its “real hip hop” I can rock with 90’s NYC shit but at the same time can throw on some Mouse on Tha Track after.
Nice one Robbie. I was caught between genuine disgust at the comments on my article, and genuine disgust at myself for getting caught up by guys who are trying to explain to me who MF Grimm and OC are…
Great work all round. I read The Guardian newspaper every day, and I’ve done so for around 30 years. The only comment I could think of writing was “did the author of this article used to work for HHC?” but I came to the realisation myself without needing to ask. I think I fall into the middle aged breaker category. Any jazz haters should get the “Hot Dog” album by Lou Donaldson for a conversion to the goodness of hot jazz biscuits.
Ha, I think we’ve all encountered these types at some point in our lives. Pretty much sums up the reason I’ll never go to a hip hop event, I’d rather just listen in my car in peace and not be annoyed by people like this.
More importantly drew when are you doing another fatlace spodcast?
Nada said about that cheesy and homo thug cover though? haha
I thought this site was “a tribute to ignorance” ? So obviously it’s demographic would agree with Drew’s ignorance supporting point of view. But not with the ignorant comments? …double standards.
We recorded one about 6 months ago, DrZ, Greenpeace is just being very, very tardy with editing it. I’ll remind him
Nas= Hip Hop. 50 cent is a rapper. And that cover looks suspect. Might as well had Young Thug on their with him.
I never been one who placed rappers on a pedestal in how much $$$ they made, and I not going to start dissin’ them in how much $$$ they lost. it’s an irrelevant concept judging Forbes list rappers like Puff, Jay-Z and 50. it’s just ironic that someone like 50 who used the concept of making money against other rappers is facing the other side of the barrel now. “rap is something you do, hip hop is something you live”.
@drew excellent still play the old ones. Some good shit
“The ‘Rap Vs. Hip-Hop’ debate, which may be the most tiresome concept ever put forth in the history of music debate.”
I agree 100%
50 has a great rack!!!!!
Just wrong
As a spectator and lifelong Hip Hop culture (as I understand it) fan I cant help dislike wack rap music. The best stuff was made by black people that probably never made much from their art, but the legacy they left is some of the best Hip Hop music ever made and will ever be made. Money cant buy that or the respect. The (Black) American Dream is really an acquirable illusion, fuckin tragic.
