When I heard that sickle cell had finally claimed the life of the H.N.I.C. himself, Prodigy, my immediate response was to go to the pub and get black-out drunk in honour of his memory. I’m working on a suitable written dedication to P’s enormous contributions to Strong Island/Queensbridge rap, but in the meantime here is a collection of great solo shots and guest spots outside of his work with Mobb Deep (which I’ve already covered here). In the meantime, please share your favourite memories of Bandana P and pour out a large amount of liquor to the great man.

I’ve been checking unkut frequently since he died because I know you have a lot to say. This one hit the gut. Keep ya head up.
Cheers Robbie. I threw together this comp of 10 Prodigy freestyles if anyone wants it

Output was incredible…props on this!
Props.
thanks. looking forward to the longer piece (PASUE)
Dude was like Rakim; a later version. Salute Prodigy RIP one of the greatest mc’s of the later period. Jay Z tried to bury him but Pee came back strong e whipped a camels azz on ‘keep it thoro’. Will be missed. Cheers Robbie, great selection as usual.
Good work.
When this comp gets the deluxe reissue treatment, throw “Raining Guns And Shanks” and the unedited version of “Pearly Gates” on there as bonus tracks.
Dont know if I would compare him to the R. What made P great IMO is that he was a true anti social CRC soldier all the way. Pure violent QB shit. Fuck Nas! Fuck Jay Z! The Sickle cell and illuminati shit finally claimed his life! RIP P
Totally agree.
Rise In Power Prodigy
This and Sean P passing hurt my heart. Totally unexpected and too early.
With the exception of Juvenile Hell, pretty much every album up to HNIC (included) was life soundtrack music. Can vividly remember what I was doing for 3-6 months after those came out. It’s like a part of us died with him.
I’m lucky enough to have gotten a chance to do a joint with Pee thru my brother Illa Ghee. Been down with the Mobb sense Juvenile Hell..Sometimes I think they get overlooked artistically because of the content. Two Incredible Lyrists with DOPE voices and very much self-produced. Truly Iconic when it comes to this art form…I’m fucked up been a rough year for me and Hip- Hop Heads everywhere… RIP Prodigy truly one if the nicest to ever touch a mic and the backbone of Mobb Deep. Salute keep that MOBB and Pee solo joint’s banging forever….

Prodigy’s flow was effortless, masterful, and endlessly quotable. No exaggeration, I recite one of his rhymes at least once a week. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve randomly spit out “You feel different, nigga? See me. I’ll throw a TV at you.”
His guest appearances in the late 90’s were untouchable. I’ve always been particularly fond of his verse on Screwball’s first album. That shit makes me hit rewind every single time.
Truth be told, I haven’t been following P’s career all that closely for the past few years. But The Infamous and Hell on Earth are in constant rotation on my playlist, and the same goes for most of his solo shit with Alchemist.
Prodigy was better than Pac, better than NaS, and better than Biggie. And I don’t mean to disrespect Sean Price, but I always felt a little salty about him trying to adopt that “It’s P” shit for himself. Sorry Ruck, but there was only one P.
… and I was sorry to see that Robbie didn’t include Young Veterans on the solo shots. That’s one of my favorites.
RIP Prodigy! One of the greats!
@Peteconcrete I quote @SlappyWhite: “Prodigy’s flow was effortless, masterful, and endlessly quotable.”
Plus vocal tone this is more or less what i mean and why i made the Rakim Allah comparison.
@Slappy White yeah Pee and Redman were the guest apperance kings back then my favorites are The War’s On, Microphone Masters remix, and Bulsworth

Prodigy may have had one of the best ears for beats in the game. Amazing catalogue and so many timeless lines, truly one of the all time greats.
This is sad as hell.
Salute
RIP dunn.
I always thought P was dope, even on Juvenile Hell. His verse on Shook Ones pt. 2 is a hall of famer, one long quotable. You could drop the needle on any random spot in that verse and get a hook. What made Prodigy dope to me was, he didn’t wow you with different flows or crazy multisyllabic rhymes but his choice of words and his aura carried him and Havoc gave him the perfect audio landscape for those vivid bars. Hip-Hop lost a true legend. Rest In Paradise, P…
You can’t forget about The It’s the Pee 97 PMD Havoc Remix with Prodigy on it!!!! BANGER!!!!!!Called cats out too!!!! This was that shit!!!!!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0uHvvU5-4s
@oskamadison: “You could drop the needle on any random spot in that verse and get a hook.”
I think every line of that verse has been used in a hook. Seriously, has any other hip-hop artist been vocally sampled as often as Prodigy? It’s unbelievable.
@Slappy
Off the head, Rakim, Milk Dee, hell Nas has been sampled more than P. The all-time crown goes to Slick Rick just on the strength of Ladi Dadi…
@oskamadison: That’s nonsense. I’ve heard Mobb Deep sampled on so many songs it’s overwhelming.
Damn. RIP Prodigy. A great emcee and like Guru said ” Mostly the voice ” and a whole lot more. Will be sadly missed from QB to GLA.
Okay, I just Googled “rapper with the most vocal samples” and I found these stats on DJBooth:
Public Enemy – 1370 hip-hop vocal samples
Run-DMC – 915 hip-hop vocal samples
Eric B. & Rakim – 628 hip-hop vocal samples
Doug E. Fresh – 586 hip-hop vocal samples
Beastie Boys – 507 hip-hop vocal samples
Big Daddy Kane – 426 hip-hop vocal samples
Kurtis Blow – 423 hip-hop vocal samples
N.W.A – 418 hip-hop vocal samples
Nas – 413 hip-hop vocal samples
The Notorious B.I.G. – 360 hip-hop vocal samples
But damn’t, that still feels incorrect to me! How could Mobb Deep not even be in the top 10? I’ve heard them sampled so many times I was convinced that Havoc must be paying producers to use their vocals.
… so now I’m checking on whosampled.com, and I see that Mobb Deep’s music has been sampled 680 times. Of course, that includes musical samples and all the rappers who have made lyrical nods to the group. Nevertheless, it proves that the Mobb have been heavily sampled by a ton of artists, so I feel a little better about myself.

hey luv is still awesome / ridiculous… Loverman P!

I was in the middle of his first book when the news hit.
Such a weird feeling.
And Havoc and his close ones had to deal with the rumors that “illuminati got him” before his body was in the ground, was also a lil disrespectful I feel.
And Hav and P had so much more music to give, together and for themselves, Im sure.
We been robbed for some good ones, and P mos def up there with the best.
He was like a lighthouse, showing other artists you can be yourself and make it, not having to compromise yourself.
