Before Akinyele made a name for himself on ‘Live At The BBQ’ and the incredible Vagina Diner album, he was down with a dude named Amazin’. The duo apparently went by the name of – you guessed it – Akinyele and Amazin’, as Joe Fatal explained to me back in 2007:
‘Akinyele had a group with this guy named Joe Amazing, and the name of the group was “Akinyele and Amazing”. He was actually on the second Marley Marl album – the Amazing cat – he had a record called “Buffalo Soldier”. At the time I thought Joe was the nicer one outta both of ’em, so I encouraged Joe to go solo, and Joe never made it anywhere. I hooked him with Marley and he made that one record and he never went anywhere. Ak started rolling with the Large Professor and they worked on their stuff.’
As was the style of the time, MC Amazing, circa his 1991 spot on the Marley Marl album, doesn’t sound very much like the Mental Illness version of Amazin’ because three years may as well have been three decades at that stage of rap’s evolution. Everyone had gotten a lot more ruff, rugged and raw by that stage, so wash down your blunt with that ice cold 40 and stop complainin’ before I confiscate your Timberlands.
