Non Rap CRC-Approved Shit: Jazz

Robbie sez: Please welcome new CRC HQ contributor, SNOWBEACH

Jazz shouldn’t be a dirty word for any CRC trustee, that music is the backbone of some of the wildest samples and stands alone as a truly unique institution of music. Every CRC member should know there Blue Note from their Columbia releases and at least have taken one bong hit while studying the cover of an ECM and wilding out out on some unsampled European treasure, word to Terje Rypdal. Bonus points if your in the company of a beautiful woman who you can’t speak the same language as.

Live jazz is a means for any CRC members to relive the flourishment of youth, because its quite acceptable to wear fitted’s, head nod and throw rap hands at shows, if only to create a distinction between the normal Parisian chin strokers and Japanese business men that will inevitably be in attendance. Ricky Powell is known to high five Lonnie Liston over his B3 Hammond at the crescendo of his residency at the Village Vanguard, alas this takes the utter confidence of a veteran because like hitting a bad note, shit gets mad awkward in jazz, real quick.

In 2014 jazz isn’t quite what it was in, say, 1954 and the same Harlem Renaissance doesn’t extend to A$AP Coltrane, its unlikely anyone will ever blow like that again…pause. Enter Toronto’s BADBADNOTGOOD who since 2010 have been blending live jazz, hip hop and rock and just dropped their third album III, which has more CRC approved drums than most hip hop albums so far this year. Despite being co-signed by Odd Future, which we won’t hold against them, they have remixed Madlib and Freddie Gibbs and JJ DOOM. Recently they played with CRC icon Ghostdini at the Alife Yard and this video is the result.
