FYP

Directed by Jess Lyons – including activation of the upstairs studios, including ‘For Your Hightened Pleasure’ – a gallery space upstairs curated by Constance Hunter.

‘Functional, Sculptural, Decorative’, is the overarching theme of the lower level exhibition/ retail space where Jess has curated a diverse group of female art practitioners (aged 25 -54) that have studied their BFA (and post-grad) together before 2020 (or are former colleagues) – to demonstrate how our collective practices have evolved during and ‘post’ pandemic. These artists share a community of practice that revolves around themes of functionality, sculpture and decorative arts.

FYP project provides a unique opportunity for this group of artists, who fundamentally believe that ‘art is work’. The intersection of our creative practices displays how artists often need to have ‘functional’ work as a primary income source – however, we share a combined value of sculptural and decorative work that we believe is equally as important, yet not typically represented in retail and gallery spaces (predominantly with ceramic art). It is hoped that the flow of research, community, workshops and exhibitions will highlight the importance of function, sculpture and the decorative as equals – that is particularly relevant to contemporary crafts – and that leaves a lasting impression on Errol Street in the ongoing connections, friends and projects we seek to generate.
