Who Is The Most Boring Rapper Alive?

Posted on June 1, 2017December 23, 2019 by Robbie Ettelson

Six years ago I asked who was New York’s most boring rapper, but never got around to polling the results. Following on from my piece about Common – and the fact that there are a number of new contenders for the throne – I’ve assembled a list of twelve candidates based on previous responses and my own observations. Please note that being boring doesn’t automatically make you bad at rapping – it just means that you’ve reached the stage in your career where all of your songs send listeners into a coma and/or you ran out of interesting things to rap about five years ago. Have at it.

It is going to be real embarrassing if Common doesn’t come in second.

  2. Mike h says:
    June 1, 2017 at

Not really. I can tolerate a Common album more than a Talib album without Hi Tec.

  3. Arson says:
    June 1, 2017 at

I find Eminem to be extremely boring also.

  4. Paul H says:
    June 1, 2017 at

    Props on repping Sir Partridge.

  5. Dino says:

I see all your nominees and raise you:
    Blade (UK)
    Killah Priest
    Canibus
    Game
    Busta Rhymes
    Black Thought
    Gift of Gab
Ill Bill/angry White conspiracy rappers in general.

Is “boring” the same as “tedious/irritating?”

Drake ‘n em are beyond boring. I know I’ve heard lots of his music but couldn’t name a single song or quote a single lyric.

  6. Esteban Monterey says:

    POST MALONE

  7. Antonio says:
    June 1, 2017 at

    J.Cole is a strong contender.

  8. ceedub says:
    June 1, 2017 at

    El-P is also very boring

  9. Slappy White says:
    June 1, 2017 at

I really like Joell Ortiz and never understood why so many heads hate on him. I voted for Lupe. I have zero tolerance for that dude.

  10. McNulty says:
    June 1, 2017 at

Ohh SHIT, Lloyd Banks in the house! Dude’s voice and flow is like a cold sheet ZZZZZZZZZZ

  11. Carl says:
    June 1, 2017 at

Talib by a long shot! Boring on the mic and on social media

  12. $yk says:

U cats make sure u get ur adjectives right….

    Boring-Cole (snoozefest)
    Mundane-Jigga

Once u say irrelevant u lost ’cause listening made them relevant folk…

Corny-Drake (son a blatant style biter with the redundant monotone harmony…singers switch notes)

Yall say Talib because of his tone…grow up…Nas? Lol…Common? Lol Lupe a lip professor…Buckshot? Yall don’t support son so stop it.

Funny how yall dead Westside Gunn for his tone…yet dead Banks for his….

And Joell official CRC…seriously I b looking at u “purists” sideways watching u flip flop quicker than a spatula

  13. Robbie says:
    June 1, 2017 at

@turtle: I could always just fix the results if that doesn’t happen.

  14. Robbie says:
    June 1, 2017 at

@$yk: Westside’s voice is abrasive, not monotone, while Banks sounds like he has a mouth full of marbles.

Mr. Ortiz hasn’t made anything CRC approved since his first album.

  15. Ben says:

What did Buckshot do to get on this list besides those 9th Wonder albums?

  16. UL7RAMA6NETIC says:
    June 2, 2017 at

Everything since Enta Da Stage. That’s who I voted for but I still fux wit BCC even though they’re all kinda boring except Sean P

  17. Ben says:
    June 2, 2017 at

@UL7RAMA6NETIC you got that I’d agree most post 90’s BCC is pretty boring. With that said though Black Moons second other two albums were some of the better post mid 90’s BCC albums cause they didn’t start using those boring 9th wonder beats yet.

  19. Chahlee Chace says:
    June 2, 2017 at

Royce the 5’9 needs to be added to that list.

J Cole,Nas, and Lupe have absolutely boring production and songs but they themselves are not boring as rappers. on Good production and hooks they are good.

Termanology gets my vote. He’s a pest of hiphop.

  20. Sub X says:
    June 2, 2017 at

I can’t believe Lupe isn’t higher on the boring list.

  21. $yk says:
    June 2, 2017 at

Not liking the tone don’t mean boring tho

  22. Slappy White says:
    June 2, 2017 at

    @Sub X: Thank you!

  23. Clapa says:
    June 3, 2017 at

@Dino Blade? Fucking legend round these parts bruv.

  24. JReynolds says:
    June 3, 2017 at

Concur on Common’s self righteous bullshit. But I would love to see Buddens on this list instead. He is by far #1 with Kendrick and Kanye rounding out the top three.

  25. Dogz says:
    June 3, 2017 at

    Eminem, easily.

  26. Dino says:
    June 3, 2017 at

I find most “underground”/”CRC-approved”/”Independent as fuck” style rappers annoyingly boring. I hate how “real hip hop” fans celebrate stuff simply because it is obscure, inoccuous and unremarkable. There’s a reason your favourite “real hip hop” act is only known for a soundtrack feature or a track on a JS One compilation. Anyway I digress…. Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, U-God and Cappadonna are all pretty boring. Most Wu affiliates are boring as fuck once you subtract Rza/4th disciple beats. Similarly, subtract Premier production from Big Shug, Bumpy Knuckles, Dynasty et al and you’ve got some real boring rappers right there.

  27. bboycult says:
    June 3, 2017 at

I definitely voted Drake….I Overstand the Kweli inclusion/votes…..and it was clear from the jump that all Robbie acolytes were going to put JCole @ a strong #1 …but fuckallothisshite

@Robbie whut ^ w/that new O.C. -Same Moon/Same Sun gettin some CRC consideration?!

@Dino lol “independent as fuck” “real hip hop” and “underground”. who says that anymore? european teenagers on instagram? not surprising you don’t understand what CRC is about since you are just making shit up.

  30. doughjoe says:
    June 3, 2017 at

@dino also please enlighten us as to the nature of the clearly better non-obscure, remarkable hip hop acts you listen to and a website where we may read about them, since I guess it isn’t here

  31. King Author says:
    June 3, 2017 at

    You’re just naming anybody now.

  32. Slappy White says:
    June 3, 2017 at

@Dino: Inspectah Deck is boring? He’s one of the most talented and consistently interesting rappers out there. And Bumpy Knuckles has been killing it for 30 years, and he’s still putting out good shit.

What is the matter with people?

  33. WuGambino says:
    June 3, 2017 at

Talib Kweli by a mile, the Usain Bolt of boring….this race ain’t even close!

  34. Dino says:
    June 3, 2017 at

@DoughJoe: Calm down and lighten up before you have a heart attack.

@SlappyWhite: You rate Inspectah Deck’s solo albums? Czarface? Boring as fook to me.

  35. Robbie says:
    June 3, 2017 at

@Dino: I hear you but to be clear, CRC-approved is the antithisis of ‘keep it real’ rap fans.

  36. Arson says:

First rule of the internet – don’t feed the trolls.

  37. Wait a second says:

I voted for Lupus, sorry, Lupe.

    Other boring rappers:
    sheek louch
    u god
    masta killa
    vinnie from naughty by nature
Kuniva and swifty mcveigh from d12
    Tony yayo
    Mc ren
    Big shug
    Chief kamachi
    Memphis bleek

    Many many others

  38. Slappy White says:
    June 4, 2017 at

@Dino: I still spin Deck’s first two solo albums. The rest of his solo work isn’t as spectacular, but it’s never dull. And I like Czarface.

  39. Randall says:
    June 4, 2017 at

When Robbie said no prize for who’s first, I thought he meant because everyone knows it’s Drake. Talib and Term can overtake commons #2 spot any day

    $yk, bboy, what up!! Been a minute…

I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again, Jadakiss is both dope but boring to me. Dude has bars but if you’ve heard one verse, you’ve heard them all. Then again, you can say that about a lot of MC;’s.

  44. oskamadison says:
    June 5, 2017 at

…Oh and Eminem, the last couple of years, spittin’ 20 minute verses on some new school Jimmy Spicer shitI got shit to do, get to the point, lol…

    Jay Electronica

  50. Robbie says:
    June 6, 2017 at

@Critical: Indeed. He’s so laid back that I need to keep punching myself in the arm to remain conscious while listening to that new album.

  51. Dino says:
    June 6, 2017 at

The guy comes up with some really interesting concepts and stories but there are times when it sounds like K-Rino is reading doggerel verse out of a greetings card. So he’s an odd case of being exciting and super boring in the ssame song.

I’m bored of Danny Brown. The formula has run its course. Half an album of squeaky voiced hedonism followed by half an album of “I’m so lonely and depressed and woe is me” self pity is tiresome.I found “Atrocity exhibition” (or whatever it was called) utterly unlistenable.

  53. bboycult says:

  54. Mike G. says:
    June 6, 2017 at

Jay Z all the way. Hasn’t put out anything good since Reasonable Doubt and even that album was boring for 96.

  55. Robbie says:
    June 6, 2017 at

@bboycult: Once I’ve posted a poll I can’t just add options in there – it would compromise the entire democratic system. I’d actually meant to answer your question directly but got distracted so here goes…I did not enjoy that album. Have a nice day!

  56. da commanda says:

  57. Bejai says:

Talib Kweli EASY! And you can thank Black Dante for that. Last time I heard Kweli sound dope was on Fix Up, but you see where that Black Star – Aretha project/mixtape/album went…into the same Nevererry box as Detox, OMFG and Patents of Nobility smh this is why fans become fickle–niggas stay bullshittin with givin fans what we want. Then niggas get butthurt when they finally drop the album 20yrs later and nobody wanna hear it. Fukn j kats

Lloyd banks 4 sure, where is grand daddy i.u.?

Kanye could get boring, n im just sick of common, now, but hungry common was dope.

Joell and talib, is you crazy?

The big question is why joell artist aint on the radio? Dude is dope and could save ny hip hop, but what happened son?

  59. Zero Dark 40 says:
    June 6, 2017 at

Only Banks could ruin a Bronson joint with LL riding the EPMD ‘Rampage’ break. Lloyd just laid down that aural NyQuil and that shit was over. Takes some skill to do that.

@Dino…take a plate, knife and fork and eat several dicks up! Speak when spoken to mothafucka….I’ve been sharing on this site w/@Robbie, $yk and Oska for a few years now; @Robbie knows me calling him ” a fart ” is like endearment coming from me…I save all my toxic bile for pieces of fuckshit like you……and your mother’s tummy ” She licks it; says it’s yummy…then fucks my man. ” -Biggie

This post is some bullshit. Jay Z and Nas boring?? What criteria makes them that? Sure they don’t make the same music they used to, but boring? Fuck y’all. The same can be said for most purist hip hop that don’t even get played at clubs or parties. That shit is boring.
