A great moment in rap – the time that LL Cool J went at Run at The Roxy:
Dr. Butcher: That was not Jam-Master Jay, that was [Jay] Philpot [the second Cut Creator] his DJ on the turntables when he was rhyming. Run-DMC was performing after him, so when he’s freestyling he’s talking about Run in that rhyme. They were walking in and that’s why he wouldn’t let go the mic – he had something to say to Run because they weren’t getting along. Then they took the mic from him and pushed him off stage so Run-DMC could perform.

DAMN!
Holee Shyt, bar’d him to death
Rap could use more of this now
What year was this?
Ckuf Fear!. Tore RUN a new one nicely. Incredible, this took my appreciation of LL Cool J to a whole new level. Thanks for posting.
Wow! Would love to see video footage of this. That captures the essence of Hip Hop music right there.
BLACKOUT STEEZ…
Yes indeed, he actually incorporated bars from the original “Rock The Bells” on this….Just think, dude was mad young when he spit that shit, these kids do not have a fucking excuse, they are just studying from the wrong blueprints obviously….
You do not have a right to say you “spazzed out on a track” unless you can reach this level of B-Boy conviction..
Ha … Run was gonna catch a LL that fuckin night fah sho!
Wow.. Gotta wonder what Run was thinking when he came on after this.
Uncle L wasn’t playing !!
Nothin like the old hungry L…….
Wow!!!! I haven’t heard this since the 80s. I never knew he was talking about Run though. That was devastating!!!!
LL wrote “rock it like this”!(one of my fav Run DMC songs ever. And they were my fav group ever) and he was 15 when he wrote that record.
Amazing MC in the late 80s till the mid 90s. In my top 5
My question is why was Run hatin’? “Cause he ran into someone younger and even more arrogant, lol? LL broke his leg off in Joey’s arse…
Am the original poster of this video on youtube & i can tell you all that this theory by Unkut is bullshit. It’s a freestyle contain many elements much or which is the original verse from Rock the Bells.
The things people will do for view ehh
@terrytees: Were you actually there? That was based on Dr. Butcher’s account of events, a guy who grew up with LL and was in a group with him during high school. It’s fair to say that his account is trustworthy.
Has he told you personally that that recording in question? Countless people played the Roxy all the time and that recordings been floating round since the mid 80’s. It’s been in circulation for close to 30 years, it’s not that rare. Never once heard that story attached to it in all those years? I know Butchers bitter about run dmc but i never heard, or read of, LL saying that shit tho.
Butcher is still in contact with LL so I assume he’s confirmed this story with him. Just because no one ever asked LL about it publicly doesn’t mean it didn’t happen like that.
oof! good luck following that tirade run. ain’t nothing like the arrogant as fuck mid 80’s ll ripping asses like that.
Terry….I hold no animosity against Run or anyone else for that matter. He is a a hip hop legend and though I have total respect for his craftsmanship as an artist, our encounter resulted in me having less respect for him as a person. What does that matter in the grand scheme of things, absolutely nothing. He is still Run from RUN DMC. Feel me.
Just to clarify, the entire verse wasn’t aimed at Run, just a portion. The majority of verse was dedicated to the neighborhood naysayers.
