10 Tapes To Be Stuck On A Desert Island With…

Posted on January 10, 2011December 24, 2019 by Robbie Ettelson

Assuming you had a solar powered Sony Mega-Bass Walkman, you could do a lot worse than being stuck on a pile of sand with these joints…

Three Times Dope – Original Stylin’
E.S.T. displays vocabulary spills that kill over bumpin’ beats for your bonkey.

Master Ace – Take A Look Around
This tape is long as fuck but no slow spots. Job done.

Boogie Down Productions – Sex & Violence
The greatest thing KRS-One ever did without Scott.

The Jaz – Ya Don’t Stop
Large Professor, The 45 King & Prince Paul all on one tape? Approved!

Kool G Rap & DJ Polo – Wanted: Dead Or Alive
No explanation required.

Threat – Sickinnahead
One of the last great LA albums before The Chronic ruined it for everyone.

Akinyele – Vagina Diner
‘Checkmate’ and ‘Exercise’ are two of the finest tracks of our generation. I’ll bare-knuckle box any man who says different!

Pete Rock & CL Smooth – Mecca & The Soul Brother
The cassette version has two extra songs that even the CD didn’t get, so this is a no-brainer.

Bushwick Bill – Little Big Man
Pure genius on every level.

Compton’s Most Wanted – It’s A Compton Thang
Kind of Compton’s answer to the first Lord Finesse album….

What would you take? Keep in mind, you have to actually own these on cassette, otherwise it’s too easy…

Really? you prefer Compton’s first album over all the others? It’s good and all, but Music to Driveby is on of their best albums of all time. Of all time.

Thumbs up for including Bushwick Bill. Ya need some comedy if you’re gonna be all alone on an island.

@robbie – nah, i copped main source on cassette as well. don’t know what your copy was like but i remember thinking the mix sounded really muddy – then disaster struck when i lent it to a friend and their deck chewed up the first 30 seconds or so of “snake eyes” lol.

good to see the threat album being given some props – it got slept on when it was released and definitely deserves to be mentioned more when people talk about quality back-in-the-day west coast albums.

I had to think long and hard about this one…

    1. I know this is cheatin’ but I would combine Rakim’s Paid In Full and Follow The Leader minus the instrumentals/Eric B. DJ showcases (lol)
    2. Nas-Illmatic
    3. Ultramagnetic MC’s-Critical Beatdown
    4. ATCQ-People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (has a peaceful vibe about it, that’s what you want on an island)
    5. Pete Rock and CL Smooth-The Main Ingredient
    6. Common-Be
    7. Raekwon-…Cuban Linx, pt. 1
    8. Gang Starr-Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr
    9. Ice Cube-AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted
    10.Redman-Muddy Waters

    And if I could slip a non-Hip-Hop album on there…Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On?
