Video: A tribute to Funkmaster Flex making faces while Black Thought rapped for ten minutes

Posted on January 7, 2018December 23, 2019 by Robbie Ettelson

As much as I enjoyed Black Thought’s incredible performance on Hot 97 a few weeks back, the star of the show was Funkmaster Flex’s reactions, as he had the best day at work…ever.

That Black Thought freestyle is incredible, it was an almost flawless performance. That’s one for the ages for sure. And Flex’s insane mugging was the icing on the cake.

That whole “freestyle” was written and he was reading it from his phone. Still it’s nice to see Black Thought get some love instead of somebody corny like kendrick Lamar’s wack ass.

  3. Dino says:
    January 8, 2018 at

Why all the excitement about Black Thought’s “Freestyle?” He’s a rapper who performed a rap. Is that not his job? How is that newsworthy? Has the bar been lowered so low to the extent that a person doing their job now breaks the internet? What next? “Calls to award Knighthood to postman for delivering post without first wiping it on his shitty arse?” “Baker to be honoured for making a loaf of bread that didn’t contain rusty nails”? “Doctor doesn’t kill patients”?

  4. Matthew says:
    January 8, 2018 at

Youve always been a middle class winey weirdo cunt, Dino.

  5. Chris says:
    January 8, 2018 at

Dino should stick to the crappy anticon bullshit he used to champion all them years ago

  6. Slappy White says:
    January 8, 2018 at

    Yeah, you’re right.

  7. Wauw says:
    January 9, 2018 at

@Dino: He did an outstanding job. A baker who makes a really delicious cake also gets props for doing his job WELL. You never say it out loud if you like something? It’s nice when good things make you wanna do that

  8. Paul H says:
    January 10, 2018 at

I’m wondering if Dino derives any pleasure from music or art. Like, if you didn’t like his freestyle all that much, just say so, but your comment on how it’s just “his job” is beyond absurd and nonsensical.

I mean, by that logic, Hendrix was just a guitar player doing his job, and Marvin Gaye was just a singer singing. What’s up with people making a big deal about them?

  9. Dino says:
    January 10, 2018 at

@Paul H. Evidently the bar has been lowered so far that a rapper reading as-yet unreleased lyrics off his smartphone without cocking up is newsworthy. There was a time, not so long ago, when this was the norm. I’m not criticising Black Thought or the rap but the disproportionate hype.

  10. Wauw says:
    January 11, 2018 at

    where was the phone?

  11. sonny7 says:
    January 11, 2018 at

Yeah, i didn’t notice him reading off a phone either, dope as fuck though, very impressive concentration & breath control if nothing else.

  12. Black Ice says:
    January 11, 2018 at

I saw the phone of his phone right next to his mic.
    Very disappointed.

  13. Black Ice says:
    January 11, 2018 at

I meant I saw the pic of his phone when he read it. It was far from off the head.
Much love to Lord Jamar. The most honest man in Hip Hop

  14. doughjoe says:
    January 12, 2018 at

nobody is allowed to enjoy anything on Dino’s watch!

  15. Dough Joe says:
    January 13, 2018 at

    doughjoe’s mum enjoys it.

  16. Moe says:
    January 13, 2018 at

@Black Ice: Very disappointed that he spit an unbelievable verse? Who cares if it wasn’t off the top. Whether it was written or not, you’re still a dumbass.

  17. Moe says:
    January 13, 2018 at

@Dino: Your analogies are horrible and make no sense. Let’s not rate an MC on how good he is as long as he spits a verse and does his job?? Disproportionate hype??

  18. Slappy White says:
    January 14, 2018 at

Dino’s in troll heaven right now. Can we all just agree to ignore him from now on?

  19. Slappy White says:
    January 14, 2018 at

@Slappy White Yes because personal abuse is a great substitute for discussing the actual issue.

  20. Foster Garvin III says:
    January 14, 2018 at

Whoever thought that Tarik went off the head is silly. He was not, however, reading from a phone. Please stop. He did formulate and commit to memory, a very intricate and well-thought out and researched series of amazing bars and spit them like no one could. He is a top-tier emcee.

  21. Black Ice says:
    January 15, 2018 at

    @MOE
You’re a fucking jerk off! You obviously haven’t heard much. This was not some Rakim “ 7 MCs in a line” type shit or Big Daddy Kane Raw. It was good but nothing to talk and talk about. I grew up in the Bronx with Lord Finesse and AG that shit was average compared to what we heard at parties you Fucking Dumb wigger!

  22. Slappy White says:
    January 15, 2018 at

@Black Ice: You’re accusing Black Thought of being not as good as Lord Finesse in his prime? Well, few rappers have ever been that nice. And I’ve never heard AG kick a better freestyle than the one BT laid down.

  23. Black Ice says:
    January 15, 2018 at

Black Thought ain’t Fucking with Finesse, OC, AG, Milano etc… They do hardcore lyrical Shit. Black thought never made a classic album like they did. They know the art of making a classic album. None of them roots albums are classics. First few were good but got real boring real fast.
Man we talking about the Bronx and Brooklyn and DITC, Nigga.
Shit these niggas did on the AVE spitting off the head way more interesting. Black Thought is talented but BORING.

  24. Pete Concrete says:
    January 16, 2018 at

Black Thought has been freestyling for decades now. From his phone Come on u jackass Only in this day and age that people think that no one can freestyle w/o. cheating. If u saw a phone it’s prolly cause Thought was reading a book while rapping lol Dino u just dumb as snot

  25. Pete Concrete says:
    January 16, 2018 at

I can’t see no phone u are tripping

  26. Pete Concrete says:
    January 16, 2018 at

Illadelph Halftime IS classic U must be def to not hear that That don’t mean tha Finesse ain’t the shit tho

  27. Slappy White says:
    January 16, 2018 at

@Black Ice: Okay, let’s break down DITC.

Lord Finesse, Percee P, Big L, and Big Pun are all legendary, top-ten caliber lyricists. (Percee P is probably the greatest rapper to never release a great album. And he and Pun are both honorary DITC members, I don’t care what anybody says.)

AG, The Ghetto Dwellas, and Milano are all outstanding lyricists, but they fall a bit short of hall-of-fame status.

O.C. and Fat Joe’s debut and sophomore albums are classics, but their abilities have really waned since their heyday in the mid-90’s.

Diamond D has never been a remarkable lyricist, but he’s one of the greatest producers to ever stride the earth, so he gets a pass. Showbiz rapped on Soul Clap and Runaway Slave, but he was mediocre at best. Buckwild, of course, has never rapped.

And beneath the official and honorary members of Diggin’ is the sea of affiliates and hanger-ons, of which the Freestyle Professors, Molecules, and DeShawn/Suniss are the only ones who are lyrically notable. (Oh, and Silky Black, too. Can’t front on him.)

So the only members of DITC who were really capable of rhyming against the best of the best are Finesse, Percee P, L, and Pun. Is Black Thought better than any of them? No. Does that make his appearance on Funk Flex any less spectacular? Of course not.

  28. f my name says:
    January 26, 2018 at

trust me when I say 99% of the rappers in the rap game today underground or commercial could not do what Black Thought did please believe that

  29. Moe says:
    January 27, 2018 at

    @BlackIce
You just proved you’re a dumbass.
    1. You called me a “wigger”
    2. You said it was average and not worth talking about yet that’s exactly what people are doing
    3. Lord Finesse and AG are not spitting like that in 2018-No disrespect to those legends but you brought those names up

Point being, it is unbelievable to spit live like that for 10 minutes but to you it’s just “average”

Why the hate on Black Thought?
He does have the same first name as you.
