If the YouTube comment section is to be believed (which it is, natch), this is a tape rip of a party on Feb 14, 1986 at Central High School in Philly where DJ Cash Money and DJ Jazzy Jeff first publicly unleashed the infamous ‘Transformer’ scratch. It also featured Kool Breeze Steve, who rolled with Cash Money before he started the group with Marvelous, doing some rapping. Sadly, his rendition of the song ‘Kill The Faggot’ was edited out by the guy who posted this in case anyone’s feelings might be hurt in 2013.
Since I was unsure in Kool Breeze Steve is the same Singing MC Breeze who made ‘Discombobulatorbubalator,’ I hit up Shecky Green to ask if he could identify the guy from is old hometown, but he wasn’t sure. Regardless, both the Valentine’s Day tape and the six part video performance of Kool Breeze Steve and Cash Money performing in Toronto around 1986 are good times. You’ll notice that Cash Money actually performs an early version of DMC championship winning routine in the Canadian vid, as well as some other tricks that he would become famous for as his established himself as worldwide DJ legend.
As for Kool Breeze Steve? Perhaps he was shut down by the same angry GLAAD protestors who boycotted Kool G Rap & DJ Polo’s ‘Truly Yours’ from radio. Or maybe he got tired of being Cash Money’s hypeman and broke north in pursuit of a solo career. Fret no more, since this video sort of addresses the issue. Regardless, those Canadian kids got to see some fuckin’ advanced turntable trickery way before it was a big thing. Using a shoe to scratch a record?! Who’d a thunk it.
